Merseyside School Games 2017
kicks and vaults off with nail biting Girls' Football and Gymnastics finals
LAST week saw Primary and Secondary
Schools from the 6 boroughs of Merseyside battle it out to be crowned champions
in the 1st of the Merseyside School Games 2017 events.
The Years 5 and 6 and 7 and 8 Girls' Football and Year 3 and 4 Gymnastics began a series of
competitions which will take place between March and July 2017, under the Merseyside
School Games banner. Run jointly by Merseyside's School Games Organisers and MSP,
this series of county level events is the culmination of months of preparation
by organisers, competitors and schools alike.
Those schools competing had already beat off stiff competition from other
schools in their respective boroughs to secure their place at the Merseyside
School Games, meaning even those not placed for a medal were still amongst the
'best of the best' on Merseyside.
Years 5&6 and 7&8 Girls' Football...
The Girls' Football Competitions were run by the Liverpool County Football
Association. Competitors got the chance to play at an elite facility; namely Halton Select Security Stadium; which is not only the home of Widnes Vikings
Rugby League Club, but also Liverpool Ladies FC and Everton Ladies FC home
ground. They were also treated to appearances from members of both Everton
Ladies FC and Liverpool Ladies FC, who presented trophies and medals, but also
took questions from them as part of a mock press conference designed to show the
girls exactly what it takes to have a career in all areas of football. In
attendance were Claudia Walker, Amber Stobbs and Meghan Wood from Everton Ladies
FC and Vicky Jepson from Liverpool Ladies FC.

► Spirit of the Games Award - Lingham Primary School
Years 7&8 Girls' Football results:

► Spirit of the Games Award - Savio Salesian College
Years 3 and 4 Gymnastics:-
The Gymnastics competition was run by St Helen's Gymnastics Academy. The event
was held in the top class gymnastics facility at Lifestyles Park Road, where
Olympic gymnast Beth Tweddle trained. As well as enjoying high quality
competition the participants also had the chance to enjoy an inspiring
performance by a senior member of St Helen's Gymnastics Academy.

Speaking about the event Chair of the Merseyside School Games Operational Group,
David Sweeney, said:- "The competitions have been a fantastic start to
this year's Merseyside School Games. The standard of participants has once again
proved extremely high and we believe the total experience the competitions
offered will prove a memorable milestone for each and every young person who
competed. With such a great start to the 2017 season I can't wait for the other
Merseyside School Games events taking place in June and July."

Springtime Coffee Afternoon
A charity "coffee afternoon"
will be held on Thursday, 20 April 2017, from 1pm to 4pm, in St Luke's Church
Meeting Room (adjacent to St Luke's Church), St Luke's Church Road, Formby,
Merseyside.
The proceeds are going to Clatterbridge Cancer
Charity. Many people will recognise the important contribution Clatterbridge
makes to the lives of cancer patients and their families in this area and
beyond.
This charity affords them that extra care at
traumatic times and supports the ongoing frontline research.
The entrance fee to the event is ₤2, which includes light refreshments. Other
activities will be included amongst which will be a raffle and cake stalls. We
will be pleased to receive any donations towards these events. Please do come
and support us and hopefully have an enjoyable experience too. Incidentally,
there is a regular circular bus service, called the 'F3', which
passes St Luke's Church. This service leaves Formby Village Centre, at the
Sumner Road Bus Stop, located behind Formby's Iceland, at 35 minutes past the
hour and it passes over the Formby Station Railway Bridge, on it was to the

Awards looking for 'ordinary'
people doing extraordinary things
A national awards programme is on the
hunt for exceptional people across Merseyside who work tirelessly and selflessly
to make a positive impact on society.
The British Citizen Award (BCA) is urging people to honour 'ordinary'
friends
and neighbours who do extraordinary things by nominating them for an award.
Successfully launched in January last 2015, over 150 people have been honoured
so far at 4 prestigious ceremonies, at the Palace of Westminster.
Previous medallists from Merseyside have included Kwong Ngan, of Liverpool, who
has dedicated almost 4 decades to his local community; Pat Caffrey, of Walton,
who has collected tens of thousands of Pounds for Woodlands Hospice; Denise
Fergus, of Kirkby, who found the courage and strength to set up a charity to
help others in memory of her murdered son; and Steve Mee, man who has dedicated
almost 38 years to HM Coastguard.
Nominations are currently being accepted for the next round of medal
presentations, which will take place, in July 2017, again at the Palace of
Westminster. All BCA recipients receive a Medal of Honour, inscribed with the
words 'For the Good of the Country.' Medallists are also invited to use the
initials BCA after their name.
The British Citizen Awards were launched to honour the incredible
accomplishments of individuals in society who positively impact their
communities. In a similar way to the Queen's Honours, BCAs are awarded twice
annually. But unlike the traditional Honours, which are often given to
celebrities and high profile figures, BCAs are given to 'everyday' people
whose achievements may otherwise be overlooked.
Those who have received medals span the generations, with the youngest BCA
recipient, Ethan Evans, aged just 14 at the time, and the oldest BCA recipient,
Max Morris, of Surrey aged 105. Ethan was honoured after overcoming his own
health challenges to go on to raising over ₤20,000 for a number of charities. Mr
Morris has spent over 18 years collecting golf balls, which he would clean,
arrange by brand and condition before boxing them up for sale in local charity
shops. Mr Morris' dedication, which has raised over ₤100,000 for a number of
charities, saw him receive his award.
Mike Faulkner, co-founder of the awards, said:- "The BCA has really
captured the imagination of the public, who are nominating people who are having
a massive impact on their communities and we are delighted as the programme
continues to grow. It's been incredible to award remarkable human beings across
the country and we look forward to honouring more exceptional people within our
communities during this next round of awards."
Nominations from all corners of the UK, all cultural backgrounds and from all
sectors of the community are being welcomed until the closing deadline on 7
April 2017.
Mike added:- "There are thousands of people across the UK making life
better for others, who formally receive no recognition. The programme has been
created to enable individuals across the country to nominate someone who they
feel deserves recognition. We have nothing but respect for the Honours system,
but believed that a more accessible recognition programme was overdue."
The awards have attracted support from several high profile ambassadors,
including Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York, actress and former EastEnders star
Brooke Kinsella, former high court judge, Dame Linda Dobbs DBE, and TV presenter
Bradley Walsh.
Sarah, Duchess of York said:- "The greatest kindness you can afford to
give someone is to listen and it is with great pleasure that I have found the
British Citizen Awards. This organisation listens to the citizens of this great
country and not only hears the stories but rewards monumental efforts that would
have otherwise gone relatively unnoticed."
The awards are in partnership with customer experience management company,
InMoment, and are supported by the world's largest optical retailer, Specsavers;
one of the largest property and leisure management, development and regeneration
companies in the UK, Places for People; leading ethical law firm Irwin Mitchell;
the UK and Europe's leading palletised freight distribution company, Pall-Ex,
owned by BCAs Patron Hilary Devey; and specialist marketing, PR and
communications agency, Lime Marketing; who will each have representatives at
the awards ceremony.
Nominations are free and people can be entered
into 1 of 8 different
categories. All nominations will be scrutinised by an independent committee,
with their choices passed on to an assessment panel for final ratification. Up

Southport Cruisers Easter Egg Run 2017
THE Southport Cruisers are holding
their Easter Egg Run, on Sunday, 9 April 2017. All bikers are welcome to join
them, provided they have correct documentation (bike licence and insurance.) The
precession will set off from Leo's Bar, on Nevill Street, Southport, at 11am and
head to Clumber Lodge, Children's Home, to donate cash, chocolates and Easter
Eggs. If you would like to donate Easter Eggs, cash or other chocolates, please
pop into Leo's Bar and pass over to the staff behind the bar. Cash must be in a
sealed envelope marked clearly:- "2017 Easter Egg Run." All
donations by non-bikers taking part must done by the night of Saturday, 8 April
2017. After the ride the bikers will return to Leo's Bar and a social session,
within the bar, will be held. |
