Miss Liverpool City Region is looking for you!
THE title of Miss Liverpool City Region, formerly Miss
Liverpool, is an official qualifying heat for the:- 'Miss England National
Final.' This is more than a traditional catwalk style contest, now
focusing on charity, knowledge, talent and more. The idea is to find a positive
role model to inspire others. The winner of the Miss England title will become
our contender for the Miss World title.
Just as with many things in life, the competition has changed over the years. It
is far more than a Beauty Pageant today!
This year the focus on women and women's rights is even greater than previously,
not just for her, but all over the world. We think this should be embraced. The
Miss England role celebrates these and many other achievements.
All contestants are now expected to not only look good on the traditional
catwalk, but away from it; they must be a positive role model who inspires.
Judges look for a wide range of things, from contestants charity backgrounds to
what they have done, for example at work, within their community and more
extensively....
Some contestants are far from what you think... Take Miss England 2009, Lance
Corporal Katrina Hodge, was nicknamed:- 'Combat Barbie.' She was
an active member of the British Army. The 22 year old squaddie, before entering,
had received a bravery award in 2005 and is still active. This amazing girl from
Tunbridge Wells told the press that:- "I wanted to show off my Army
skills. I think I'm showing that women in the Army can be pretty and girly, but
also that girls who enter beauty pageants don't have to be bimbos. In reality,
some of the other Miss England girls are training to be lawyers and barristers.
"Beauty with a Purpose," is the slogan the Miss England Contest works with that
in mind."
Years before she entered Miss England, Doctor Carina Tyrell from Cambridge, who
won in 2014, was raising funds for local charities.. Interestingly, Doctor
Tyrell only finished her University exams the week before competing in Miss
World 2014. She said:- "You're never going to get away from the fact that
people are attracted to beautiful things. Let's use beauty and do something with
it. A Miss England must be a beautiful ambassador for the country, it's not all
about just having a pretty face. To be beautiful, you must also be beautiful on
the inside and have a caring heart."
Not only that, in 2015, Kirsty Heslewood, Miss England 2013, was awarded Freeman
of the City of London for her incredible charity efforts.
Then we have Miss England 2017, the 1st English delegate to make the top 3, in
Miss World, being placed as the 2nd runner up. Following the result in Sanya,
China, Stephanie Hill gained the title of Miss World Europe, after winning the
European contestant with the highest scores. Stephanie has recently graduated
with a 1st Class Honours Degree in Oncology and Radiography. She is also a very
impressive horse rider, winning many events and gaining a placed at Horse of the
Year Show (HOYS).
You don't need to have such an impressive Colloquium Vitae, but do not be put
off, these are just a few examples from the girls who have become Miss England,
. We highlighted these though to show that it really is:- "more than just
a Beauty Pageant!"
Don't worry, you do not need to be 'Combat Barbie' but you do need
to think about how you can become a role model and should you win, commit to
attending some events.

ALDI Southport staff and
customers raise cash for teenage cancer trust
KIND hearted customers and staff at
Aldi in Southport have raised more than ₤3,000 for the Teenage Cancer Trust.
This sum has been raised after colleagues and customers completed a range of
activities including cake sales, raffles and tombolas. Similar events were held
at Aldi stores and Regional Distribution Centres across the UK and together
helped to raise ₤1.2m nationally for the charity.
Aldi's partnership with the Teenage Cancer Trust began in January 2017 and aims
to raise ₤5m over 5 years to support the charity's work with young people across
the country. The amount raised nationally so far has exceeded the 1st year
target and local stores including:- Southport, Ormskirk and Burscough have
further fundraising events planned for 2018 and beyond.
Victoria Metcalf, Area Manager at Aldi UK
said:- "Our colleagues and customers have gone to great
lengths to raise funds for this fantastic cause. The Teenage Cancer Trust
makes a huge difference to people's lives in our local area and we have been
overwhelmed by the support and generosity our employees and customers have
shown. We're looking forward to raising even more in the months and years to
come."
Kate Collins, Interim Chief Executive Officer at Teenage Cancer Trust, said:-
"We are hugely grateful for the support Aldi has shown us so
far, and to the customers and staff who have come together to raise this sum.
This money will be used to ensure young people with cancer have the best
treatment, care and support; and ultimately ensure that no young person faces
cancer alone."
Teenage Cancer Trust delivers world-class cancer care and support to young
people diagnosed with cancer aged 13 to 24. It works in partnership with the NHS
to provide highly-trained expert staff and specialist cancer units in NHS
hospitals across the UK. The charity is there at every stage from diagnosis,
through treatment and after treatment. It also brings young people with cancer
together so they can support each other.
Hospice open day for new
volunteers
SHOP assistants, patients buddies,
bucket collectors and fundraisers; St. Joseph's Hospice has a number of
volunteering roles available and will be holding a Volunteer Open Day on Sunday
4th February for anyone who would like to find out more.
The Open Day will run from 2pm to 4pm and visitors will also have an opportunity
to speak to other volunteers for an insider's view about what's its like being
part of the hospice team. They will also be able to look around the hospice and
see first hand how all the money raised by our volunteers is spent and the
difference it makes to people's lives.
Siobhan Clinton, Volunteer Co-ordinator, said:- 'Volunteering is a
fantastic way to contribute to your local community and a wonderful way to get
out and about and make new friends. Without our volunteers, we simply couldn't
run the hospice and so by donating just a few hours a week, you would be making
a huge difference to the lives of all our patients and their families at such a
difficult and distressing time for them.'
St. Joseph's Hospice has lots of plans in store for 2018 so that it can provide
more services to more people. But, finding new sources of income is crucial for
this and so there will be lots of opportunities to get involved in raising
money, whether it's through helping its charity shops, supporting fundraising
events or bucket collecting at key events and locations across Merseyside.
Siobhan added:- 'We have lots of different volunteering roles available,
for example, our shops in Southport and Formby are really in need of more shop
assistants, but we also look at what skills people have to offer so it may be
that you can help us to provide new an exciting service to our patients and
their families.'
If you can't make it on 4 February 2018, but are interested in volunteering and would
like to find out more, call Siobhan Clinton on:- 0151 932 6046 or email:-

Taxi licensing crackdown success
OFFICIALS in Liverpool targeted more
than 2,000 drivers in 2017 in a drive to enforce Taxi licensing laws.
Operations by Council officers and Merseyside Police took action against a total
of 2,091 drivers; the vast majority (1,895) from Liverpool, but some from:-
Sefton (94), Knowsley (76) , Wirral (9) and Halton (4) and also 1 each from
South Ribble, Bolton and Wolverhampton.
75% of the cases involved private car drivers parking illegally in Hackney Taxi
Ranks (1,511); a big concern for Hackney drivers; while 7 Private Hire drivers
were also warned. A total of 485 Hackney and Private Hire drivers were issued
with written warnings for a variety of offences, and 53 were prosecuted. And 29
drivers were penalised for illegally playing for hire and associated insurance
offences, while 13 cherry picking notices were issued to Hackney drivers.
Other offences included:- 125 vehicles with illegal tyres, and 79 cases where
drivers failed to wear or display their badge.
Over 2017, the Council has stepped up its enforcement action, with 9
staff working in conjunction with a number of Police Officers spotting vehicles
which aren't complying with the law.
In December alone, 241 defect notices or suspension orders were issued on Taxis,
44 drivers were issued with written cautions, 118 fixed penalty notices were
issued to private vehicles parked on Taxi stands and 4 drivers were warned
for cherry picking.
Council lor Christine Banks, Chair of the Licensing Committee, said:- "I
don't believe that any other City outside of London is doing as we much as we
are to crackdown on drivers who flout the law. The statistics speak for
themselves and our message is that we are on the side of those drivers who play
by the rules. We are determined to make the playing field as level as it can be
and support the Taxi trade as much as we can. It should be remembered that
most drivers follow the rules and law abiding Private Hire and Hackney owners
have nothing to worry about. There are a very small minority who breach
regulations, and we are committed to taking action and in doing so, send a clear
message out that it is not acceptable. Passengers should always ensure
they only use properly licensed taxis or pre-book Private Hire vehicles,
otherwise they are placing themselves in danger."
