Film Review:- "Split..."
Review by Aleksandra Smirnova.

WE went to the Vie Cinema in Southport to watch a film which is called:- "Split." This is a psychological thriller that has only recently been released.

The movie was written by M. Night Shyamalan and stars many top names, which includes the main cast:- Aleksandra Smirnova, James McAvoy, Anya-Taylor Joy, Betty Buckley, Haley Lu Richardson and Melissa played by Jessica Sula.

The main character, played by James McAvoy is a man, called Kevin, who suffers from a dissociative identity disorder; hence the films' name "Split." We are told as the story progresses, that Kevin's disorder means he has 23 totally different personalities, like:- Patricia, Dennis, Hedwig, Barry, Orwell, Jade and The Beast.

The very beginning of this movie starts in an American diner, at a birthday party, of 1 of the 3 main female characters. You see a table where some of the girls from the school were having fun, except 1. The 1 girl, who is called Casey, was sitting on her own; this made us think she was lonely or even abandoned. The reasons behind her isolation are revealed further down the line, via a sub plot that looks into her troubled past, via strange flash backs.

SPOILER
ALERT!
We find out that Casey she had been sexually abused by her uncle, who she was now living with. From the diner the film moves to the car park and then to 3 girls including Casey; being kidnapped by the man, who at this point is called Kevin. They are taken to a house and then most of the rest of this film takes place within that basement.

At 1 point Kevin's dissociative disorder reveals a persona that is feminine, called Patricia. She comes in to the film in quite a strange way, when the girls see her through the door, after hearing a conversation between what they think is 2 people.

As the film progresses the girls become separated after try to get out.

1 of the most interesting characters, played by James McAvoy, is Hedwig, who claims to be 9. This leads to a very disturbing seen and also comical one, when Casey try's to befriend Hedwig, asking to be take him to his room, to see his window... But this is not a window you would think it would be.

Without destroying the plot any further, in my opinion this film was that it is very disturbing. There were so many changes in themes, for example themes, that I found it confusing at times.

This film has a very strong cast, and despite it being very strange, they do a very good job of holding the film together. But I would say that this is not a fun film or a main stream film as it difficult to get into and to understand.

Because it is not a linier story line and subject hard to follow, I would give this film:- 3 out of 5.

Our verdict 3 stars out of 5:-

Type:- Thriller / Horror   Runtime:- 1h 57m   UK Cert.
