Sefton schools scoop awards
at the Educate Awards 2016
SEFTON'S inspiring teachers, support
stars and stand out schools have been awarded at the prestigious Educate Awards
ceremony that was held, on Friday, 18 November 2016.
Over 500 guests gathered for the Educate Awards ceremony held at the Liverpool
Anglican Cathedral, hosted by actor and comedian Neil Fitzmaurice.
The awards, in partnership with Copyrite Systems and Ricoh, is now in its fifth
year and is the biggest celebration of education in the North West.
On the night, 21 awards were handed out to schools in Lancashire, Merseyside and
Cheshire. A great variety of projects and skills were represented, from
entrepreneurial awareness, dazzling stage performances, creative literacy
initiatives to inspiring community partnerships.
Netherton Moss Primary School in Bootle reigned supreme in the Outstanding Arts
in a Primary School category, winning the award for the 5th year. It's
'National Treasures' performance, which was devised and developed by pupils, impressed
the judges with its creative and engaging concept; it explored the topic of
Great Britons throughout history, such as The Beatles and the Suffragettes.
Another school from Sefton proved successful in the arts, with Formby High
School winning the Outstanding Arts in a Secondary School Award. The award was
won for its very talented dance department, who undertake incredible
performances including one at the prestigious U Dance national platform this
year.
Valewood Primary School's Miss Chris Eglin was runner up for the highly
competitive Teacher of the Year Award. In the words of one child, Chris is:- "the
best teacher in the world; she just gets me."
Other runners up on the evening include Bishop David Sheppard CE Primary School
in Southport for the Innovative and Creative Literacy Award and St Michael's CE
High School in Crosby for Most Inspirational Secondary School.
Guests were treated to special performances by talented North West pupils,
including BBC Young Musician finalist Andrew Woolcock, Formby High School's Mundo Afrika Choir and Winstanley College's three students, Jacob Maguire,
Hannah Hill and Sarah Prescot.
Over 250 choristers and a 50 pupil orchestra from 9 schools across Merseyside
also brought their musical talents together to perform as the Educate Awards
Super Choir on the night. Led by choirmaster Matthew O'Keeffe from The Belvedere
Academy, performing schools included The Belvedere Academy, Bickerstaffe CE
Primary School, Rainford CE Primary School, St Hilda's CE High School, Liverpool
College, Netherton Moss, Archbishop Blanch School, Whitefield Primary school and
Academy of St Francis of Assisi.
Kim O'Brien, founder of the Educate Awards, says:- "The number of entries
we had received is testament to the excellence and hard work seen in our schools
and colleges across the North West. We are proud to host this event which
champions the creativity, diversity and dedication of schools in Merseyside,
Cheshire and Lancashire."
As one judge so eloquently put it:- "It's so reassuring to know
the next generation of children are in such good hands.' Congratulations to all
of tonight's winners, runners up and shortlisted schools."
The winners were chosen by the esteemed judging panel which includes:- Henry Platten, founder of the multi award winning eCadet Scheme; Michelle Dow,
managing director of All About STEM; James Tartt, Merseyside track athlete and
architect; Radio City breakfast host Leanne Campbell; Olympian and managing
director of Raise The Bar, Steve Smith; Councillor Gary Millar, Assistant Mayor,
Mayoral Lead for Business & International Trade; Chris Walker, regional managing
editor of Trinity Mirror North West and North Wales; Lesley Martin Wright, chief
executive of Knowsley Chamber; Fiona Barnet, director of The Foundry Agency;
Andrew Pimbley of Wirral's Claremont Farm; and the education team at the
respected Everyman and Playhouse Theatres.

Late night services back for
2016
ARRIVA, Stagecoach and Merseyrail will
be running late night buses and trains this festive season to help you get home
easily.
Night buses will be running on the four weekends before Christmas on selected
routes and late trains will be running a limited service to Hooton and Southport
on the 2 weekends before Christmas.
Merseytravel Committee Chair Cllr Liam Robinson, said:- "Late night
services are back for the third year running and by working together we can give
people more choice when it comes to travelling around the Merseyside during the
festive season. We are
encouraging people to plan their journey, have options and check not only travel,
but weather updates too before heading out."

On Friday nights / Saturday mornings 16 December and 23 December and on Saturday nights /
Sunday mornings on 3 December, 10 December and 17 December late night/early morning buses will be
running from midnight until 4.40am.

Vasily becomes Citizen of
Honour
VASILY Petrenko, the Russian conductor at the helm of the
Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra since 2006 has become Liverpool's next
Citizen of Honour in a special ceremony, on Wednesday, 23 November 2016.
Vasily, chief conductor of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra), was
added to the Roll of Citizens of Honour and presented with an official scroll, by
the Deputy Lord Mayor of Liverpool, Councillor Malcolm Kennedy.
He was nominated to receive the accolade for his commitment to music and the
City, and his partnership with the UK's oldest continuing professional symphony
orchestra which has attracted international acclaim.
Councillor Kennedy said:- "I'm delighted to be presenting Vasily with this
honour. His contribution to Liverpool's cultural scene is invaluable and his
partnership over 10 years with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra has
really put the city on the map, attracting acclaim from across the globe for
their concerts, broadcasts and recordings.
This City has become home for Vasily and his passion and ambitions for Liverpool
are clear in everything he does. He has already been given the civic title of 'honorary
scouser' back in 2009, and I hope he will be pleased with this latest
acknowledgement of his role as a fantastic ambassador for the City."
Vasily said:- "I'm deeply honoured to receive this recognition from the
city which my family and I have made our home. I have always known Liverpool to
be 1 of the world's great music cities, and since coming here in 2006, I've
experienced 1st hand the great passion for music that is at its heart.
I would like to offer my thanks to the city, Mayor Anderson and his colleagues,
our audiences and supporters. They continue to believe in and support Liverpool
Philharmonic's vision to be 1 of the world's great music making organisations,
deeply rooted in our City, and an ambassador for Liverpool as a great place to
live, work, study and invest in."
Vasily took up the conductor's baton as Liverpool Philharmonic's Principal
Conductor in 2006, becoming Chief Conductor in 2012. His dynamic musical
partnership with the orchestra, now in its tenth year, continues as a golden age
in Liverpool Philharmonic's 176 year history. He has led the orchestra on
international tours to Japan, China and the major European cities and together
they have made a number of award winning recordings.
The Citizen of Honour title is the latest acknowledgement of Vasily's
contribution to music and Liverpool's cultural scene. He has also been awarded
Honorary Doctorates by the University of Liverpool and Liverpool Hope University
and an Honorary Fellowship by Liverpool John Moores University
Recognising his recordings with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, he
was the Classic BRIT Awards Male Artist of the Year 2012 and 2010, Germany's
Echo Klassik Awards Emerging Artist of the Year 2012, and Classic FM/Gramophone
Awards Young Artist of the Year 2007.
The Citizen of Honour Awards were introduced in 2008 to formally recognise those
individuals who have made a significant, exceptional or unique contribution to
enriching the image of the city and/or its citizens. To date there are 27
Citizens of Honour including Bill Shankly, Liverpool World War 2 veterans,
April Ashley, Dr David France and Lewis Biggs.
Grassroots sport and
physical activity stars celebrate alongside Merseyside's Rio 2016 athletes
LAST Friday, 18 November, saw the Rio-inspired Merseyside
Sporting Champions Dinner 2016 take place at iconic sporting venue, Aintree
Racecourse. The event recognised the county's sporting talent, plus the people
who make sport and physical activity happen here on Merseyside.
Following Rio 2016, this year's event also featured appearances from several
Olympic and Paralympic VIP guests, all of whom were honoured during proceedings.
Guest speaker and Paralympic table tennis player Jack Hunter-Spivey gave an
emotional, candid and heart-warming speech which took the audience on a roller
coaster of tears and laughter. He left the audience with one overriding thought
on the night - "If your dreams aren't scary then they're not big enough"
and, speaking after the event, had this to say:- "As winner of the 2010
Merseyside Sporting Champions Dinner it was an honour to be asked to speak at
this year's awards. It was both amazing and emotional to be able to talk about
realising my dream of becoming a Paralympian…. And to receive a standing ovation
was an incredible feeling."
Meanwhile Rio 2016 Para-cycling Gold medallist Lora Fachie (née Turnham), who
took part in a Q&A session with the other five Rio 2016 athletes attending
commented:- "It was fantastic to see so much sporting success in
Merseyside this year, from grassroots to international level, and to see
everyone to get the recognition they deserve. I was honoured to present Roy
Jones with his Lifetime Achiever Award, as he truly deserved it and overall I
really enjoyed helping everyone celebrate their success."
Nominees and guests had flocked to the event from across Halton,
Knowsley, Liverpool, Sefton, St.Helens, Wirral and beyond to hear the winners
being announced.
10 awards were handed out in all during the evening. They included Community
Sports Project of the Year, sponsored by WEALTH at work; Primary and Secondary
School of the Year, sponsored by Sonex; Young Sports Person of the Year,
sponsored by LJMU Sports Scholarship Scheme; and Young Volunteer of the Year,
sponsored by Sport Liverpool. Full details of all the winners will shortly be

online.
The prestigious annual event is run by not-for-profit organisation, Merseyside
Sports Partnership (MSP), one of 45 County Sports Partnerships in England. The
organisation connects local organisations, people and investment together;
unlocking the power of sport and physical activity to empower Merseyside's
residents to be active for life.
Speaking about the event Jean Stephens,
Director of Merseyside Sports Partnership said:- "It was a great honour
and a privilege to witness the amazing talent on Merseyside taking to the stage
for this year's awards. It was also incredibly heart warming and inspiring to be
able to hear from some of Merseyside's Olympians and Paralympians during
proceedings. The whole evening proved that the combination of aiming high,
dreaming big and having a life long support team around you is the perfect
recipe for achieving your goals."
Greens Pleased To See Plans Growing
LIVERPOOL Green Party are pleased to see their 1 Tree
Per Child proposals being implemented across schools in the City. The
initiative, which Liverpool is the 2nd City to adopt, encourages children to
become part of their community by planting trees in parks and green spaces
across the City. The proposals were initially put forward by Liverpool Green
Party Councillor Anna Key, having worked with colleague Councillor Lawrence
Brown on researching the initiative's success in Bristol.
Leader of Liverpool Green Party, Councillor Tom Crone commented on his
colleagues success in getting the Labour led Council to agree to, adopt, and
implement the scheme. "Our Green councillors have worked hard on getting
this scheme taken up by the Council. But their tenacity, and belief in the
project as a benefit for our children, and wider Liverpool communities
eventually paid off. For the last year we have been working on this and drumming
up support. 1 of the earliest proponents of the scheme was the wonderful St. Vincents in West Derby; Cllr Brown recently helped out with a related seed
planting event at the school."
The 1 Tree Per Child scheme, which was founded by film star Olivia Newton John
and has TV's Kevin McCloud as an ambassador, aims to connect young people with
the natural environment, providing benefits such as increased environmental
awareness, empowering children to make a difference and improved mental health.
Councillor Tom Crone, who is busy preparing to launch his Metro Mayor manifesto
commented further saying:- "I'm so proud of our councillors for pushing
this scheme through the Council using powerful, impassioned arguments. I am
looking forward to working closely with the schools and other organisations who
will put this brilliant idea into practice."
The scheme comes from one of many initiatives that Green Councillors have
steered through the Council in the past year and Councillor Crone is keen for
more successes in future:- "We will continue to challenge the Council to
introduce Greener policies and practices, One Tree Per Child is a great example
of this." |
