Isle of Man Steam Packet
Company sponsorship of the Isle of Man Four Wheel Drive Club
THE Isle of Man Steam Packet Company
has continued its sponsorship of the Isle of Man Four Wheel Drive Club for
another year. Throughout 2016 the club will hold a series of trials around the
Island for off-road vehicles, with drivers competing for victory in various
classes. The Isle of Man Steam Packet Company Trial series has already had 2
exciting rounds, the first at South Barrule Quarry won by Ross Moore and the
second at Dhoon Quarry won by Bob Boyde. Formed in 1989, the club holds regular
competitions in the Isle of Man, as well as travelling off Island to compete.
Its events also attract drivers from the UK to test themselves against the Manx
terrain in organised contests.
Last year around 50 people from the Red Rose Land Rover Club spent a week in the
Island hosted by the local club, and there are also regular visits by other
clubs from England and Wales. A Challenge event planned for May will also have
off Island participants. Richard Crane, from the Isle of Man Four Wheel Drive
Club, said:- "The trials sponsored by the Steam Packet Company are the
backbone of the club's event calendar, so we are very pleased for the continued
sponsorship. There are 3 classes, for short, medium and long wheelbase vehicles,
and a trial typically consists of negotiating your vehicle between 8 pairs of
cane gates on various types of terrain with the aim of not hitting the canes. It
is a test of the driver's skill and, often depending on the type of terrain, the
strength of the vehicle. Our events do attract off Island drivers, and the club
has also been involved in assisting with filming for BBC's Country File on the
Island and taking visiting journalists to some of the most remote areas of the
Isle of Man. We also pride ourselves on being responsible when we off road and
go to great lengths to respect the environment. We were instrumental in the
creation of the Green Lane Users' Group (GLUG), and our members are involved in
inspecting and carrying out maintenance and repairs to the Island's extensive
network of legal green lanes."
Steam Packet Company Chief Executive Mark Woodward said:- "The Isle of Man
Four Wheel Drive Club has a busy calendar of events which attract local drivers
and visitors to the Island. The provision of popular and properly organised
off-road events which bring people to the Isle of Man from across the UK is a
benefit to the local community, and something we are happy to support." |

Students Perform at Stunning
Cathedral with International Choreographer and Actor
PERFORMING Arts students from
Knowsley
Community College took part in a performance at Liverpool's Anglican Cathedral
this week, working with renowned choreographer Sitakumari and Gladiator actor,
Sir Derek Jacobi. The performance, which celebrated Indian folklore and
aimed to unite cultures and faiths in times of adversity, was part of a touring
programme produced by Barrie Osborne, who is most famous for producing the Lord
of the Rings film trilogy. Such a project required a theatrical back drop
with no location better suited than Liverpool's Anglican Cathedral which added
drama and fantastic acoustics to the performance.
Carmel Moss, the students' lecturer explained
why KCC students were chosen to perform in this production:- "The team
involved in the performance were impressed by the high levels of creativity and
engagement our students had for the project. It was an honour for the college to
be asked to be involved in something so memorable."
The students were asked to perform in February
and since then, have been working with students from Liverpool Hope to prepare
for the performance. John McDonough, Extended Diploma student, commented on how
all the hard work paid off:- "Working with university students and
internationally acclaimed artists has been a real eye opener and privilege. We
only had three workshops before the event so seeing it all come together in the
end was very satisfying. Having the opportunity to explore a different dance
style has developed my skills further which I can use again in different
contexts."
After the performance, the students were
praised by the organisers for being:- "an absolute joy to work with and a
big credit to the college."
USDAW delegates applaud
justice for the Hillsborough 96
THE delegates at the annual conference
of shop workers trade union Usdaw greeted the verdict of the Hillsborourgh
inquest with a standing ovation as the union's General Secretary broke the news
to the hall.
Speaking to Usdaw's Annual Delegate Meeting in
Blackpool's Winter Gardens, John Hannett; Usdaw General Secretary said:-
"We can only imagine the trauma and difficulty those family members faced as
they struggled for justice over many years; particularly when the establishment
did everything to avoid the truth coming out and justice being done. Let's not
forget The Sun headlines that did everything to demean and demonise people who
were effectively killed as a result of negligence. What a disgraceful piece of
journalism!"
The General Secretary then invited delegates
to join with the families in applauding the inquest jury. |
