'Run with Ben' to
Support Boy with Rare Syndrome
GARY Jones will run the Rock 'n' Roll
Liverpool Marathon on 14 June 2015, while pushing his 8 year old son in a buggy,
but he hasn't always been a runner. Gary started running for his son, Ben, who
at the age of 4 was diagnosed with a rare developmental disorder called Phelan McDermid
Syndrome (PMS).
Gary decided to run with Ben after he participated in a virtual 5K race put on
by the Phelan-McDermid Syndrome Foundation. He realised that running with Ben
not only provides a way to relieve stress and bond with his son, but also helps
stimulate Ben's sensory needs.
Gary started running in more races on behalf of PMS, running last year's Rock 'n' Roll Liverpool Half Marathon and this year's EDP Rock
'n' Roll Madrid Half
Marathon, all while pushing Ben.
The Rock 'n' Roll Liverpool Marathon is the next big race on his running
calendar and a big step up to the full marathon distance. Gary will once again
be running with Ben to raise funds and awareness for the Phelan McDermid
Syndrome Foundation.
Rock 'n' Roll Liverpool participants are also encouraged to 'Run with Ben'.
This can be done by answering 'Yes' when prompted to be part of the
campaign during the 5k registration process. Those who select to be on the
'Run with Ben' team will receive a t-shirt and a donation will be made to one of
Ben's chosen charities. The 'Run with Ben' promotion applies to the new
5k on Saturday only.
There is a wide range of severity of symptoms observed in people with Phelan-McDermid
Syndrome. Like other autism related syndromes, PMS is associated with
intellectual disabilities, sleep disorders and seizures. Most children with PMS
have moderate to severe delays and often do not develop functional language. In
addition, Ben has an increased tolerance to pain and has also been diagnosed
with ADHD.
Despite all his challenges Ben remains a very happy little boy and brings smiles
everywhere he goes. To donate to Ben's appeal, you can do so on his
website.

Festival in memory of Joseph
A community event in memory of murdered
teenager Joseph Lappin is to be held in Old Swan.
Army cadet Joseph was the victim of a knife attack in October 2008 as he
attended an event at Shrewsbury House. His family are keen to raise awareness of
gun and knife crime and the effects it has on all concerned.
Joseph had clear ideas on what he wanted to do with his life and was already
taking steps to make sure he fulfilled his dreams. The Joseph Lappin Foundation
has been established to raise funds to help other young people achieve their
dreams.
And the Joseph Lappin Centre is a facility with a community led café
incorporated, providing a wide range of activities for all ages.
An annual festival is held to raise funds for the foundation and centre. This
year's event will be held at Doric Park, on Sunday, 17 May, from 12 to 5pm.
It will feature live music from local bands and solo artists, a beach complete
with deck chair, dance troupes, donkey rides , circus skills, football, dodgeball and a lot, lot more.
"There really is something for everybody at the festival. Many of those taking
part have given their services free. As well as being a great day out it will
raise funds for the Foundation and centre named in honour of Joseph and will
help young people make something of their lives as he was striving to do." said Joseph's
mother, Toni. Homeless hound with dinosaur
marking hoping her chances of find a happy home are not extinct
DOGS Trust Merseyside is appealing for
dog loving dinosaur enthusiasts to help find a loving home for a very special
dog. 18 month old Terrier, named Jessie, has a unique white marking on her
chest in the shape of a dinosaur which really surprised staff when she first
arrived at the Rehoming Centre. She is looking for a loving family of her own
who will take her digging for fossils to her heart's content.
Dogs Trust Merseyside Supporter Relations Officer, Aimee Best explains;-
"We were stunned when we spotted the white marking on her chest which looks just
like a dinosaur. That's where the similarity between Jessie and a Velociraptor
ends as she is such a sweet natured, fun-loving girl who adores people and loves
to play. She is looking for experienced terrier owners and would prefer to be
the only pet in the home so that she can enjoy all your attention to herself."
Aimee adds:- "We are hoping her special marking may appeal to dog loving
dinosaur fans as she is a very skilled and enthusiastic digger and is often
digging for bones so we wouldn't be surprised if she found a T- Rex fossil one
day. With the new Jurassic Park film due shortly we are hoping that as fans are
unable to adopt a real dinosaur Jessie will be the next best thing"
