Southport Jazz Festival Events
THE annual Southport Jazz Festival
returns this May where it once again takes over the Town. It is an
important date in Southport's event calendar as it showcases a range of
different jazz styles across the town in various venues from pubs, clubs,
hotels, churches and more.
This year it runs from Friday, 8 May to Sunday, 10 May 2015, and 'The Atkinson'
is providing
4 headlining gigs across the weekend from well known names of the genre
including James Morton Quartet Ft - Pee Wee Ellis, Digby Fairweather and Craig
Milverton... Also upcoming stars of the genre, who are on the cusp of great
things, like
the fabulous:- Riot Jazz Brass Band and the diverse Joshua Cavanagh-Brierley Group; all making names for themselves at festivals and events across the UK.
► Kicking the fun off on Friday, 8 May
2015, at 8pm, will be something truly special, James
Morton Quartet Ft: Pee Wee Ellis (James Brown fame).
James Morton is 1 of the most exciting saxophonists in the UK today and The
Ambassador of Music for Bristol. Pee Wee has been a major influence for James'
music and development over the last 15 years. This project influenced by the
funkier side of jazz reminiscent of the 1960's blue note era will bring grooves,
blues and gospel inflected melodies and soloing along with the unmistakable
Hammond organ style with shuffles and funky back beats.
Pee Wee of James Brown fame is one of the funkiest players alive and is arguably
responsible for creating the genre of music known as funk. Expect some series
grove, soul and lyrical playing with this sparky sax led outfit.
Get ready for classic funk and soul hits and collaboration not to be missed.

► Riot Jazz Brass Band on Saturday, 9 May
2015, at 8pm is exciting and something not seen
at Southport Jazz Festival before. They bring the feel of summer early and have
you dancing the night away with their original sound. Riot Jazz Brass Band is a
9 piece brass band made up of trumpets, trombones, a sousaphone, drums and an
MC. They play a uniquely twisted mix of funk, soul, hip-hop and aggressive jazz.
The band has featured at festivals around the world over the past 5 years.
Recent performances include West Holts Stage at Glastonbury, The Big Red Tent at
Womad, Soundwave Festival (Croatia), Kendal Calling, London Jazz Festival,
Manchester Jazz Festival as well as being invited to play on Channel 4's Sunday
Brunch and at Ted X talks in Salford.
The Riot Jazz Brass Band navigate a minefield of original peace-lovin' aggro
jazz, hip hop samples, funked up favourites and re-interpreted dubstep,
drum'n'bass and dance floor bangers that never fail to send limbs flying!
The band recently released their debut album:- 'Sousamaphone' and their
first 7" single (Corn on the Cob), which are both available on First Word
Records. The album has been played widely on radio stations around the world.

► The event will then slow things down a bit and change the mood on Sunday, 10 May
2015, at 3pm, as it
welcome's 'Jazz in the Afternoon' with Digby Fairweather and Craig
Milverton.
Trumpet legend Digby Fairweather and poll winning pianist Craig Milverton are
currently celebrating 20 years of musical partnership in Digby Fairweather's
Half Dozen which has won the British Jazz Award for 'Top Small Group' for nine
out of the last ten years and is re-nominated for the award in 2015.
Their 2006 album 2 Part Conversations was hailed as an 'outstanding
contribution to jazz duo discography' in The Times and their appearance
at Southport will be a rare celebration of intimate music-making amid a nonstop
UK tour celebrating the Half-Dozen's twentieth anniversary on the road!
This afternoon event of music, part of the Southport Jazz Festival takes place
in the beautiful surroundings of The Atkinson Galleries. Enjoy fabulous virtuoso
musicians and an afternoon tea. Tickets:- £17 (including afternoon tea)
► The Joshua Cavanagh Brierley Group are at the very start of their career,
forward thinking and highly energetic they perform original compositions that
cover a wide range of styles and dynamics.
From extremely complex arrangements to minimal, popish melodically-driven
compositions, the Nonet draws on a broad spectrum of influences and is
unfettered in its creativity. The group is bursting with exciting individuals,
inspiring one another to push themselves further in each performance.
The Joshu Cavanagh-Brierley Group performs at 7.30pm and brings our 2015
programme to a close. Tickets:- £6.

Maggie's Merseyside at
Clatterbridge wins the Architects' Journal Small Projects Award
MAGGIE'S Merseyside at Clatterbridge, the charity which
provides free practical, emotional and social support for people with cancer and
their family and friends, has won the Architects' Journal Small Projects Award.
Built in the grounds of The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre, Maggie's Merseyside at
Clatterbridge was designed by architects Carmody Groarke and has been supporting
people with cancer since June 2014.
Great design and architecture is vital to the care Maggie's offers and the
Centre was designed to create a calm and uplifting environment as well as
providing a programme of support to strengthen the physical and emotional
wellbeing of people with cancer.
The design of the Centre incorporates seven portable buildings, 6 of which have
been used previously as building site accommodation with the seventh being the
'London Dresser' commissioned by the Mayor of London for the London 2012
Olympics celebrations. The 11 metre long glass panelled side of the
'London Dresser' has allowed Maggie's Merseyside at Clatterbridge to showcase a
panoramic view over the farming fields of the Wirral landscape which helps to
create the calm and uplifting environment within the Centre, so important to
visitors and staff alike.

Now in its twentieth year the Architects' Journal Small Projects Awards
celebrate the best schemes built with a budget of £250,000 or less.
Maggie's Merseyside at Clatterbridge relies on voluntary donations to support
and grow its network of Centres and to develop its unique, high quality
programme of support. The charity's aim is to make the biggest difference
possible to people living with cancer and their family and friends.

Football pitch scheme given a boost
PLANS for a new 3G football pitch and changing rooms in
Liverpool 8 have been helped by a decision to allow land to be sold for housing.
Tiber Community Building want to develop community based leisure and sports
facilities;- including the pitch; on the site of the former Tiber Street
school.
The Football Foundation has indicated that they can apply for a grant of up to
£500,000 but match funding is needed.
To meet the funding gap they want to sell a 0.6 acre strip of land along Coltart
Road for housing development with the potential for about 25 new homes to be
built.
However, when Tiber acquired the site from the Council in 2005 a covenant was
placed on it saying it could only be developed for community use, sport,
education, or cultural purposes.
The cabinet has agreed to lift the covenant and allow the plot of land to be
sold for housing to raise funds to cover the gap.
Councillor Malcolm Kennedy, cabinet member for regeneration, said:- "The
Tiber project is an important element in the regeneration of this part of the
City and their scheme to bring new leisure facilities is imaginative and one
that will bring great benefits to the area.
It is significant that the FA have included the Tiber site as being particularly
important as it meets their diversity agenda to increase the number of black and
ethnic minority players, coaches and referees.
Our agreement to ease the restrictions on the use of the land will allow this
scheme to progress and make a big difference to the community."
Debbie Wright, Tiber Trustee, said;- "This project, which is led by local
young people, offers a once in a lifetime opportunity for making positive
changes in their local neighbourhood and we are delighted that Liverpool City Council are giving the scheme their full support."
Civic welcome for inspirational women
A group of inspirational women from all walks of life will
swap their stories at a special networking event at Liverpool Town Hall this
week.
On Friday, 27 March 2015, Lord Mayor Councillor Erica Kemp CBE will celebrate the
achievements of local organisations such as the Women's Organisation, who
support women starting their own business, Safeplace, the sexual assault
referral centre and Blackburne House who provide education and training to
support women into jobs.
Councillor Erica Kemp said:- "It was great to be involved in so many
activities this year for International Women's Day and as Lord Mayor of this
amazing City it's fantastic that I can highlight one of the many roles that are
available for women today.
I am delighted to be welcoming so many strong and positive women here to the
Town Hall, I hope they can learn from each other and benefit from sharing their
experiences as a positive role model for women."
Councillor Emily Spurrell, Mayoral lead for Community Safety said:-
"'There are so many organisations in Liverpool that provide valuable support to
women whether it be starting their own business, mental health support or
providing a safe space for women suffering domestic abuse.
As a culmination of the campaigns and events which took place for International
Women's Day we just wanted to take a moment to say thank you and express how
much we appreciate the work they do."
