Employers in the Liverpool
City Region lead the way in inspiring young people
RESEARCH from the UK Commission for
Employment and Skills (UKCES) has found that Liverpool City Region businesses
are out performing the rest of the country when it comes to offering inspiration
and work experience to young people.
The findings from a national survey of employers show that young people face a
postcode lottery when trying to find work experience and that businesses in some
parts of the country are almost twice as likely to offer it as those in other
areas.
UKCES say that by failing to offer meaningful work experience and other
activities, employers across the country are letting down young people where
they need the most help.
However, the report singles out the Liverpool City Region for bucking this trend
and applauds the high level of local employers supporting young people by
offering work experience, career talks, mock interviews, and site visits to
young people.
The findings show that local businesses are setting the bar
nationally for inspiration.
Richard Else, Director of Production Operations, Jaguar Land Rover and Chair of
Liverpool City Region Employment and Skills Board, said:- "Work experience
is an important part of developing a career and it's fantastic that so many
young people in the Liverpool City Region are learning about the world of the
work 1st hand. I'm delighted that local employers are being recognised for the
great job they do in providing inspiration, work experience and other
opportunities to young people. This is a testament to the dedication and
leadership of the Employment and Skills Board over the last few years and we
will continue our hard work to ensure young people can develop the skills they
need to take advantage of economic growth in the City Region."
The Liverpool City Region Employment and Skills Board deliver an on going
programme to encourage effective engagement between local businesses and
potential employers.
One such initiative was the Skills Show
Experience in June 2014. More than 4,500 young people from across the Liverpool
City Region attended this 2 day event and took the opportunity to meet with employers and
participate in over 120 'have a go' experiences, showcasing a range of
job opportunities available across the Liverpool City Region. |

Southport women
wins Diabetes UK volunteering award
A Southport woman who has
devoted over 25 years to supporting young people, teenagers and
children living with diabetes has won a volunteering award from
Diabetes UK.
65 year old June Dunn won the Supporting Others award at the
charity's regional Inspire Awards, held in the Village Urban Resort
in Warrington on Saturday, 7 February 2015. This award is for an
individual volunteer who undertakes a role that helps to support
people living with diabetes.
Mrs Dunn, who worked with children with diabetes as a nurse for 25
years, spends her spare time volunteering at the Lancelots
Children's Diabetes Support Network. Ten years ago, she joined the
Network and she has played a key role in supporting children with
Type 1 diabetes and their families ever since. Recently, she was the
driving force behind the setting up of a new support network locally
for young adults who have graduated from the Children's Diabetes
Support Network.
Stephen Ryan, Head of the North of England at Diabetes UK, said:-
"June is an inspirational support for young people in the area.
Diabetes can be a tricky condition to manage at any age but there
are particular challenges facing people once they reach 18. They are
likely to be managing their condition away from the watchful gaze of
parents but, at the same time, can by very frustrated by limitations
placed on them by diabetes.
Sometimes young people living with diabetes can feel very alone, so
by setting up this group, June has made it possible for young people
with Type 1 diabetes have regular opportunities to access peer
support. June's steadfast care and concern for the graduates of
Lancelots Children's Diabetes Support Network made this possible.
The Inspire Awards are a great opportunity to thank our fantastic
volunteers for their dedication, which helps us support people with
diabetes. There are 3.2 million people in the UK diagnosed with
diabetes, and our dedicated volunteers like June help us support
them to manage their condition, as well as reach people at risk of
Type 2 diabetes and fund pioneering research. Our volunteers are our
army on the ground working hard in their communities. Our
much-needed work wouldn't be possible without their incredible
support."
Commenting on her award, June said:- "I was very surprised to
be even nominated but it is lovely. I do have to say that I am a
team player and all that we have achieved over the past ten years,
we have achieved as a team so this award is really for everyone in
the Lancelots Children's Diabetes Support Network."
Diabetes UK has 300 registered volunteers in the North West region,
many of which also belong to the charity's 32 local support groups.
