First World War
Commemoration in Liverpool This Weekend
A special programme of
commemorative events to mark 100 years since the beginning of the
First World War takes place in Liverpool City centre this weekend
from Friday, 12 September 2014 to Sunday, 14 September 2014.
Merseyside First World War Commemoration will take place at key
central venues with in the City:- Liverpool Anglican Cathedral, St John's Gardens, St
George's Hall and Exchange Flags.
The events have been organised by The First World War Commemoration
Task Group. The group is made up of representatives from the 6 Local
Authorities of Halton, Knowsley, Liverpool, Sefton, St Helens and
Wirral, as well as the Ministry of Defence and organisations
including SSAFA and the Royal British Legion.
The weekend programme begins on Friday, 12 September 2014, with a lunchtime
concert at Liverpool Anglican Cathedral. More than 600 pupils from
primary schools across the 6 boroughs will set the scene through
specially chosen songs, drama, dance and poetry from the WW1 era.
This will be followed by a number of public events during the
remainder of the weekend. The programme is the 1st in a series of
commemorative events taking place across Merseyside over the next
four years to mark key dates and events throughout the history of
the First World War.
Visitors to St John's Gardens on Saturday, 13 September 2014, between 10am
and 5pm will be transported back to 1914 to learn what life was
really like at the time of the outbreak of the First World War at
WW1 Commemoration Day. And a real highlight will be a special guest
appearance from The Band of the Grenadier Guards, who will give a
½ hour performance in St John's Gardens prior to their full
concert in St George's Hall later that evening. The band has not
performed in Merseyside in living memory, so this is one event not
to miss.
WW1 Commemoration Day is a free educational and nostalgic family
experience to give visitors a fascinating insight into many aspects
of life in 1914, including housing, clothing, transport,
entertainment, public health and the rise of women at this time.
This will be done through exhibitions, stalls and live performances.
It will also explore what the Call to Arms meant to thousands of
families in and around the (old) counties of Lancashire and
Cheshire.
Activities at WW1 Commemoration Day at St John's Gardens include
Sefton CVS and Sefton Council telling the story of the borough during
WW1; Royal British Legion will advise people how to find military
records for family members; Knowsley Council will showcase its Big
Heritage WW1 workshop; The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day
Saints will assist search for historic records, index data records,
a storytelling area about WW1 life and a photo booth to try period
clothing; National Museums Liverpool invites people to look up their
family history on the NML database containing the biographical
details of 80,000 men who served in the King's Regiment during WW1;
The City of Liverpool Lions Club is hosting a display of the work of
Blind Veterans UK and Pagoda Arts will be giving leaflets about the center and giving out information and photo displays about Chinese
involvement with the WW1 and come and meet Poppy and Flanders – 2
ponies commemorate the heroes from WW1.
Enjoy a short stroll around St John's Gardens and St George's Hall
Plateau and discover Liverpool's fascinating store of war literature
with Liverpool at War Walk and Tour. Few generations have escaped
the effects of war, and many Merseyside writers have written about
different conflicts and their own wartime experiences. This
fascinating walk explores how local writers including Helen
Forrester, Wilfred Owen, Shirley Hughes, Nicholas Monsarrat and
Beryl Bainbridge have depicted war and its impact on the people and
communities at home. With readings. Guided by Deborah Mulhearn
The Band of the Grenadier Guards will play a full concert filled
with the music which has made them a national treasure for more than
three centuries. The concert is a fundraising event for SSAFA, and
takes place in the magnificent Great Hall of St George's Hall at:-
7.30pm, on Saturday, 13 September 2014. Throughout Britain's history, the
music of the Grenadier Guards has been the backdrop to national life
and identity. They are regarded as one of the world's finest
military bands, with sounds to fill spectators with a real sense of
national pride.
The concert will also feature the sounds of mass choir, Song
Merseyside. The group is made up from a number of local choirs,
including Sing Our Socks Off, Pacific Swing, Vox Swing, St Helen's
Singers and individual singers, who will perform and entertain
guests as they arrive at St George's Hall.
A poignant Multifaith Drumhead Service at Exchange Flags will
conclude the weekend programme on Sunday, 14 September 2014. The service
will remember the ceremonies that soldiers of all faiths and beliefs
received before they went to War in 1914. The public service takes
place between 12pm and 12.30pm on Sunday, 14 September 2014, at Exchange
Flags.
The Drumhead Service originates from when Military Chaplains in the
field used the drums of their battalion or regimental band to
construct a makeshift altar, so that they could hold religious
services close to where the troops were positioned. The drums were
covered by either a simple cloth or a flag and topped by a simple
cross.

Society of Radiographers will be balloting members over NHS pay
dispute
THE Society of
Radiographers is to notify NHS trusts and employers across the UK
that it will be balloting its more than 17,000 members who work in
the public sector as part of the ongoing pay dispute with the
government.
The notices to employers have been issued on Monday, 8 September
2014, and Society members, who carry out diagnostic imaging and
radiotherapy procedures, will be sent their voting papers a week
later.
The SoR says the ballot to ask members whether they will support
strike action or action short of a strike was "inevitable" following
the decision by Jeremy Hunt, the Secretary of State for Health, not
to invite the independent review body for the NHS to make a pay
recommendation for 2015.
Paul Moloney, the Society's trade union and industrial relations
manager said:- "Our members will endure a continuing pay
freeze, the 4th in the past 5 years and that is unacceptable.
Radiographers, in common with many other healthcare professionals,
have simply had enough of their goodwill and loyalty being taken
advantage of. We all accepted the need to support the restraints
placed on public services because of the recession but now that the
economy is improving and growing, it is time for pay to at least
keep place with inflation. We have members who, in real terms, have
lost thousands of pounds in pay. Our members are dedicated to their
work and to the care of their patients. They frequently work unpaid
overtime to ensure that patient care is of the highest quality."
The Society will know the result of the ballot by 3 October 2014 and
the organisation's UK Council will make a decision about what action
will be taken during the following week. |

Liverpool teens
meet HRH The Countess of Wessex after sailing adventure
4 Liverpool teenagers were
presented to HRH The Countess of Wessex, Patron of the Association
of Sail Training Organisations (ASTO), at the Royal Greenwich Tall
Ships Festival on Friday, 5 September 2014, after sailing in the historic
regatta on the Sail Training vessel, Maybe.
The 4 received bursaries to take part and none had ever sailed
before getting on board the Sail Training vessel in Falmouth.
Liverpudlians Cerys Williams, 17, Alice Lennon, 17, Sophie Wilson,
17, and Katie Dalton, 17, are all students at St John Bosco Arts
College.
The teenagers were 4 of 280 young people from a wide range of
backgrounds who sailed in the Falmouth to Royal Greenwich Tall Ships
Regatta on board 19 boats operated by ASTO members. It is the first
time a Tall Ships Race has both started and finished in a British
port.
Cerys Williams, from Norris Green,
who received a bursary from ASTO to take part, said:- "This
was my first time ever on a boat so at first I was totally out of my
comfort zone. I gained confidence and experience as time went on and
learnt a lot. I particularly enjoyed learning how to hoist the sails
and my short stint on the helm was really fun. If someone asked me
to go sailing the answer would be yes, for sure."
Katie Dalton, from Croxteth, said:- "I have to say I felt
totally out of my comfort zone too. It was totally unlike anything I
have ever experienced before but I enjoyed it."
Alice Lennon, from Anfield, said:- "Getting up at 0400 for a
night watch is something I would never have imagined doing. It was
actually fun particularly when I saw dolphins. I was amazed at how
well everyone got on, and how quickly everyone made friends. I think
the most memorable time was when I was holding hands with someone
I'd only met two days before, whilst being seasick. It is also
interesting how it is possible to forget so quickly about the nasty
bits like being seasick. It was definitely a bit of a life changing
experience in that respect."
Sophie Wilson, also from Anfield said:- "Sailing is not
something I would have imagined doing, and certainly not going so
far out to sea. It was a good experience and I would say it has made
me much more independent because I didn't have my family to rely on.
Basically I just had to get on with it. It was a big step and I
would highly recommend it, although I have to say I am looking
forward to going home."
The Countess of Wessex joined trainees on board the Sail Training
vessel, John Laing, operated by the Ocean Youth Trust South for a
short passage down the Thames from HMS President to Wood Wharf,
Canary Wharf where most of the ASTO fleet is berthed.
ASTO Chairman James Stevens then introduced The Countess of Wessex
to the trainees who sailed from Cornwall to the capital under the
ASTO banner.
Commenting on the visit, Stevens said:- "I was delighted that
our Patron HRH The Countess of Wessex met many of the trainees who
were on board our ASTO Sail Training vessels in the Falmouth to
Royal Greenwich Tall Ships Regatta. I'm also thrilled that she was
able to attend our reception on board the Jubilee Sailing Trust's
tall ship Tenacious to congratulate the ASTO skippers - not only for
achieving great results in the race but also for the vital work they
do providing challenge and adventure for young people."

Meet your
Ambulance Service at Goodison Park Football Club
THE North West Ambulance
Service NHS Trust (NWAS) are giving the public a unique opportunity
to meet staff and take part in a wealth of activities, at our Annual
General Meeting and Health Fair on Wednesday, 17 September 2014, at
Everton Football club's Goodison Park Stadium.
At the free event, members of the public will be able to meet
emergency service staff, Trust volunteers and gain an insight into
how the Service works.
The day will begin with the AGM at 1.30pm and visitors will hear
briefings from Board members on the Trust's performance and future
plans with the opportunity to ask questions. This will be followed
by the Health Fair, which will take place from 2.30pm to 4.30pm, and
includes information stands on all our services and those of our
health sector and emergency service partners. So, come along and
explore our emergency vehicles, or meet members of #Team999, and of
course your day wouldn't be complete without a selfie with Trust
mascot, PandaMedic!
Mary Whyham, Chairman of NWAS, said:- "We are delighted to be
bringing our event to Liverpool this year. We as a Trust recognise
the hard work the people who live and work in the region, our staff,
volunteers and our emergency partners have put into the area to help
the community. We are holding the Health Fair to celebrate and share
the exciting work we are undertaking with members of the public, our
stakeholders and partners. This has culminated in our improved
understanding of our patients' experiences. We wish to invite you to
come and be a part of the day, meet your local Ambulance Service
staff, share your views and of course enjoy the displays and
demonstrations."
A key aim of the event is to raise awareness of the Trust and its
initiatives throughout the region.
There will be a wide range of
display stands offering information on various emergency and
community based schemes the Trust leads on across the North West.
The event will not only raise awareness of what NWAS does as an NHS
Trust, but also how the organisation works in partnership with other
emergency services and healthcare professionals; some of which will
be present on the day.
If you have ever wanted to find
out more about NWAS or are interested in getting more involved with
the work it does, then this is a great opportunity to get your
questions answered first hand.
The full address for the event
is:- Everton Football Club's Goodison Park Stadium, Main Stand, on
