ONE WORLD FESTIVAL

WILLIAMSON Square was the place to be on Sunday, 6 July 2014, as the One World Festival returned to Liverpool City Centre.

The 5 continents were represented as spectators were treated to a cultural extravaganza of performance and workshops.

The free event which is now into its 5th year offered something for all ages and showcased the unique sights, sounds and tastes from around the world.

The girls of Samba Livre gave proceedings a definite carnival feel as they danced energetically in the afternoon sun to a large and enthusiastic crowd, whilst Movema repeated their exciting Chinese New Year Flashmob routine with streamers and spring heeled acrobatics. With the World Cup Final now looming, Silky Skills demonstrated his amazing football juggling tricks and China Pearl treated spectators to an elegant traditional dance piece. The performances were diverse and colourful. There was even a female drumming band and many other fine musicians and vocalists.

Various stalls offered drinks, food, crafts and face painting. The Bandstand was turned into a mask making workshop and elsewhere youngsters had fun learning how to hula hoop.

If that wasn't enough there were impromptu performances popping up everywhere with towering flowers, dancing butterflies, a couple of truly wacky ballroom dancers and even a mechanical giraffe with its own group of handlers.

The first One World Festival was held in 2010, as part of an initiative in Kensington, Liverpool to highlight the multipliCity of cultures in that area of the City. Since then the event has grown each year. In 2013 it teamed up with the Bold Street Traders to stage the festival on Bold Street, attracting an audience of over 30,000 people.

Garth Dallas, Festival Director said:- "I am truly honoured that we had the opportunity to organise such an historic event and make Liverpool proud by the sheer brilliance of our cultural programme. All 5 world continents were represented, showcasing multiculturalism in full united colours. It was really an amazing day and we look forward to continuing the development of the One World Festival!"

The One World Festival will be back next year.
