Grants up for
grabs to give employees smarter travel choices
EMPLOYERS who want to offer
staff more environmentally friendly and cost effective means of
travelling to work have only weeks left to bid for grants of up to
£10,000 from Merseytravel.
Organisations that sign up to Merseytravel's Employers' Network will
have potential access to funding opportunities as well as bespoke
consultancy support to help their employees make better choices
regarding journey's to and from the workplace.
The initiative is proving to be a big hit with businesses since it
launched in 2012 and the team has already given out hundreds of
thousands of pounds to companies to improve their carbon footprint
and offer new transport solutions for their staff.
Staff who work at organisations such as Everton Football Club and
the Tate Gallery in Liverpool, as well as City centre businesses and
housing associations are all reaping the health benefits and making
smarter travel choices.
Michael Salla, Health and Well being Manager at Everton FC said:-
"As part of our commitment to staff health and well-being we
embarked on a mission to secure accreditation to the Health@Work
Workplace Wellbeing Charter. Thanks to funding from Merseytravel we
were able to install cycle racks, CCTV and changing facilities with
showers, which helped us to secure
'Excellence' status. Our new infrastructure facilitates
active transport; walking and cycling; for staff, project
participants and visitors to the stadium. Football fans can also
utilise the bike storage facilities on a match day to further
promote active transport."
For the Tate Gallery, the option of cycling to work for staff was
proving so popular that the arts organisation needed to expand and
applied to Merseytravel for a grant to help.
Dawn Brady, Gallery Services Manager, said:- "We had provided
a bike shelter for staff but it soon became oversubscribed. More
staff wanted to cycle to work and leave their bike somewhere safe.
We applied for a grant not only to provide an additional shelter but
also to upgrade our shower and locker room facilities. Our
application was successful and feedback shows that our staff are
delighted with their new facilities."
Merseytravel's aim is to encourage as many people as possible to
walk, cycle or use public transport, and helping businesses to
change travel behaviour is a key priority for the transport
authority.
Liz Chandler, Merseytravel's Director of Corporate Development,

transport is concerned is something we're committed to. It has been
great working with businesses and supporting them to maximise their
productivity where staff travel and transport is concerned.

There are only a limited amount of grants available and are awarded
on a first come first served basis up until June 2014. Any

Liverpool Business Week returns for
2014 THE
Entrepreneurship, football and commercial property will be among the
topics up for discussion when Liverpool Business week returns to the
City in June. A series of forums and roundtable discussions will
take place at venues across the City from Monday, 16 June 2014,
featuring a host of leading business owners and decision makers.
Organised by Downtown Liverpool in Business and The Women's
Organisation, this year's programme centres upon a 'futures' theme
and combines a number of free-to-attend forums for up to 150
delegates with a handful of discreet, invite-only roundtable

International Festival for Business and features guest speakers from
Ernst and Young, Bruntwood and The North West Fund, as well as the

The Band of the
Grenadier Guards
ON Saturday, 13 September
2014, the
sound which symbolises the very essence of the nation will be
welcomed into the Great Hall at St George's Hall when The Band of
the Grenadier Guards will play a live concert filled with the music
which has made them a national treasure for more than three
centuries. The concert forms part of the weekend to commemorate WW1
and is also a fundraiser for SSAFA on Merseyside.
Throughout Britain's history, the music of the Grenadier Guards has
been the backdrop to national life and identity; representing
British constancy, dignity and artistry;– attributes shared with the
venue for this unique concert; and the guard are now regarded as
one of the world's finest military bands; having filling the streets
of London with music and colour; a truly historic sound and sight
which invokes the very sentiment of national pride.
The Band has served 15 monarchs over 325 years with dedication and
pride and have been present at all the major royal occasions:
births, coronations, weddings and funerals and have been witness to
all of the country's key historic events both tragic and joyful;
they raised morale during the darkest hours of the Second World War
and their uplifting music ushered in a new beginning at the
Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II.
Throughout their long history the band has travelled abroad to far
off locations including Australia, the United States of America and
Canada, with The British Grenadiers March becoming one of the most
recognizable and memorable tunes in the world and part of musical
heritage.
The event is brought to you by SSAFA the UK's oldest charity
supporting the men and women of the Forces. SSAFA Merseyside in 2013
assisted over 600 clients and raised £266K to support their needs.
Robin McGrath, Merseyside Branch Secretary of SSAFA said:-
"We
at SSAFA Merseyside are very excited about the Grenadier Guards Band
coming to Liverpool to support this very important weekend and our
work in supporting our clients. The Band has not been on Merseyside
in living memory and this concert will be a real boost to our
volunteers and those clients we support."
Alan Smith, General Manager of St Georges Hall said:- "St
George's Hall is delighted to play host to the magnificent Band of
the Grenadier Guards. The grandeur and splendour of the Great Hall
is normally brought to life by the power of the Willis organ. I am
sure the Grenadier guards will be able to match the power and
quality of the organ, and will provide a fitting tribute to the
halls strong links with the military, particularly in this hundredth
anniversary year of the First World War, for which the hall
performed a local integral part."
