Leo's Bar
Southport - is back!
A pub in Southport Town
Centre has re-opened to the public and has revealed some of their
very interesting plans for bringing in customers.
Leo's Bar which can be found on Nevill Street in the middle of
Southport's Town Centre, was taken over by its new proprietor, Andy
Crompton, this January, and whilst the pub has been trading, it will
only be on Easter Sunday that they will be hosting the Grand
Re-Opening.
One of the Land Lords, Andy, explains:- "We will be opening
properly on Easter Sunday. We will be celebrating the opening with
the Canadian band, April Moon, who will be singing from 7pm until
2am. Afterwards will be an open mic, as that always seems popular."
April Moon are a Canadian Rock band who are currently in the UK due
to some recording, as well as gigging around the country.
Apart from the grand opening, Leo's Bar has also some interesting
weekly events lined up for customers.
Andy said:- "Every Thursday we will have an open mic, there
will be a weekly video quiz on Sundays and hopefully, starting in a
few weeks' time, a poker night. We just need to iron everything out
for that one, but we hope to start it soon."
Whilst Andy and Leo's Bar have high aspirations for the
establishment, there is still a lot of work to be done before the
pub will be fully rejuvenated.
Andy said:- "Once our insurance money comes through, we'll be
getting a sign for the front door, the front bar will be lit up and
by April we are hoping that the kitchens will be open for our
customers."
Following our
article about businesses'
unhappiness with the Council's support for local businesses, we
asked Andy how he thought that they could add a new spark into the
nightlife in Southport.
Andy added that:- "Firstly, by bringing the Council back to
Southport, they're called Southport Council, but they seem to be
focusing the majority of their efforts in Bootle. Southport is one
of the most expensive places to live and work in the North West, and
we're not even a City!"
Nonetheless, Andy and Leo's Bar are optimistic for their new
establishment, and will welcome anybody who fancies paying a visit
on Easter Sunday. They are open 5 to 12 midnight, Monday to Friday,
and 12 noon to 12 midnight on weekends.
More information about Leo's Bar can be found on their
Facebook page.

Official World
Cup 2014™ Wine Comes to Bem Brasil, Liverpool
A wine tasting event has recently been held in the Bem Brasil
restaurant on Hanover Street, in Liverpool City Centre. The event,
to which local businesses and chains were invited, introduced 9 new
wines from Brazil which will soon be available in all Bem Brasil
chains, to commemorate Brazil being the hosts of the World Cup™
2014, later this year, and one range, FACES, is also the official
wine for that event.
The wine-tasting had gathered together many interesting people,
including representatives from both Lidio Carraro Boutique Winery,
the winemakers, and South Sea Wine Merchants, who are the
Brazilians' sole UK representatives. One lucky guest was a winner of
a Liverpool One Twitter competition, and as a result was invited to
join in with the wine tasting, an event he very much enjoyed. The Bem Brasil staff were also there to enjoy the wines on offer, whilst
several others also attended to
sample
them.
The evening started with a presentation by a representative of Lidio
Carraro Boutique Winery, Marcia
Amaral, who gave a background of all of the wines and explained
their origins. "These wines are inspired by the cheerfulness
of Brazil. Brazilian wines are not as well known in the UK as other
wines. Lidio Carraro aims for a heightened focus on Brazil,"
said Miss Amaral. "This event will give people an idea
about what is different about Brazilian wine."
Lidio Carraro was founded in 1998. The senior member of the family,
the aforementioned Lidio Carraro, joined by his sons Giovanni and
Juliano, began the winemaking process and by 2002, they had produced
their first fine wines. Lidio Carraro was the first Brazilian winery
to be internationally recognised for their wines. They have garnered
such a reputation, that they are now the official wine of the World
Cup™
2014.
Their wines are primarily made from grapes, in order to help
preserve them, and ensure that they are a 'pure wine.'
Wood is never used in the making of the wine, in order to preserve
the purity of the grapes that they make the drinks from. "All
of our wines are un-oaked, oak is not used whilst making our wines.
Our vision is to make pure wine. We want to be proud of our wine, a
wine that will represent Brazil." said Miss Amaral.
The head winemaker is Monica Rosetta. Still a relatively young
woman, in her 30's, Monica has already worked as a winemaker in
countries such as France and Italy, and this wealth of experience.
That, plus the Carraros' attention to detail and quality has
culminated in the creation of the new selection of wines.
The attendees were then able to taste each of the 9 wines that were
on offer, and were then invited to write feedback about each wine.
There were 3 brands; FACES, Dadivas and Agnus. Each wine was given a
brief background presentation whilst the wines were being tested.
There seemed to be a particular liking amongst several guests,
including myself, for the FACES red wine, its sweet taste was a
subject of specific attention. The general consensus with guests was
that whilst containing a lot of flavour, it was not too strong,
definitely one of the favourite choices. There was also a focus on
the different aromas permeating from each wine, each providing a
unique quality, something Miss Amaral was eager to explain in her
presentations about the wines.
As the event came to a close, Miss Amaral answered some further
questions about the wines. "We have different distribution
expectations for each range of wines, but we expect Faces to sell
about 20,000 bottles, and the other 2 ranges (Dadivas and Agnus) to
sell about 30% of that of Faces."
As for the actual cost of the wines, Justin McLeod, the Finance
Director of the South Sea Wine Merchants, who are Lidio Carraro's UK
representatives, was on hand to give a brief breakdown of how much
each range would cost. "These wines will probably cost from
£14.99 up to £19.99, the Faces range will probably be towards the
latter. Dadivas and Agnus will probably be about £16.99 to £17.99.
The reason for this is that they're premium wines, and the cost from
Brazil, which is outside the EU, is higher than that of Spain or
Portugal, etc.)"
Will you be making the visit to Bem Brasil to try out these wines,
and celebrate the start of the World Cup™ 2014 in Brazil?
Local wine lovers will be able to try the wine at Bem Brasil, which
has 4 branches in the North West including Manchester and Liverpool
