Rural businesses
in Lancashire to achieve income security and growth with solar
power.
IN light of the recent
flooding issues to hit the UK and the impact of bad weather towards
rural businesses, namely the agricultural sector, Lightsource
Renewable Energy, the UK's leading solar energy generator is
organising a series of 'solar seminars' to benefit rural
communities, with the first seminar located in Skelmersdale,
Lancashire to provide education and independent advice to farmers
and rural business looking to achieve income security and growth.
The solar seminar will be hosted at the National Farmers Union
Regional office in:- Skelmerdale, Agriculture House, 1, Moss Lane
View, Lancashire, WN8 9TL, on 13 March 2014, starting at 4.00pm. The
seminar will cover all aspects of solar power deployment and its
benefits including ground and roof-mounted systems, funding,
business integration and planning regulation.
Solar farms are ground-mounted solar panels laid out in series and
provide secure, guaranteed income to landowners. This is an
attractive option for farmland diversification because only 30% of the rented area is occupied by panels and infrastructure,
allowing the farmer or landowner to explore further land use options
like grazing small livestock or implementing biodiversity
enhancements to protect local species like English Grey Partridge.
Roof-mounted solar panels are affixed firmly to a rooftop in a
manner that doesn't harm the roof structure and is sturdy enough to
withstand extreme weather conditions like gale force winds. Owners
of large buildings like milking barns or chicken sheds can have
panels installed for free by Lightsource and gain at least 20%
savings on electricity bills.
Conor McGuigan, Business Development Director comments:-
"The benefits of solar power should not be underestimated. Both
ground mount and roof mount systems have equal key parts to play in
providing energy security to small and medium sized businesses as
well as creating a sustainable, local economy. This is very
important for rural businesses, in particular farming, whereby you
are dependent on the elements and nothing is guaranteed."
Lightsource Renewable energy is the largest developer and operator
of solar farms and commercial scale rooftop installations and has
recently announced that it will be managing over 4,000 acres of land
which has been diversified for 'solar farming' and its
commercial rooftop division is the fastest, most experienced
installation team in the UK, having installed the largest number of
commercial rooftops in the country. Conor continues:-
"Being the largest means we have the most experience. We want to
share this experience with rural communities and businesses to
provide better insight as to what can really be achieved with solar
power. Having even a small portion of guaranteed income, which is
not weather dependant can make a significant difference to a rural
business and supply chain. We have been developing solar
installations since 2011. We have witnessed first-hand how solar
power has benefitted the local rural economy and supply chain. The
majority of our clients and landowners invest the guaranteed income
back into their core farming business in many ways like buying new
equipment, improving facilities, increasing their stocking levels
and diversifying crops."
The seminar programme runs as follows and is free to attend.
Speakers include Jonathan Scurlock, NFU Chief Advisor on Renewable
Energy and Climate Change...
► 4.00pm to 4.15pm - All About Ground Mount Solar
to making the most of
your land
► 4.15pm to 4.30pm - All About Rooftop Solar
to make your roof work hard
for you
► 4.30pm to 4.45pm - Making solar fit your farm business and funding it
► 4.45pm to 5.00pm - All about planning for solar (roof and ground
mount)
► 5.00pm to 5.30pm - Question & Answer to the panel and refreshments
served
► 5.30pm to 7.00pm - Drop in session - For those unable to attend the
seminar, the panel will be available to meet individuals and discuss
any queries till 7.00pm
Conor concludes:- "We hope this seminar will provide valuable
knowledge to rural communities on how they can further grow their
businesses in a sustainable way. We all want to have access to more
British produce; this can only happen with secure investment into
the local supply chain, to give rural business confidence to invest
in growth."

Letters to the
Editor:- "From No Platform to No More Page 3 - Is it time to call
an end to campus censorship?"
"I would like to let your
readers know that on 11 March 2014, from 6pm to 7.30pm, Liverpool
Student Guild, we will be holding a debate. With the widespread
banning of Robin Thicke's 'Blurred Lines' and satirical 'Jesus and
Mo' cartoons at British universities in the past year, censorship is
once again looming over British university life. In response to the
increasingly ban-happy sentiment of UK students, online magazine
spiked has launched the 'Down With Campus Censorship!' campaign, to
make the case for unfettered free speech for all students – no ifs
and no buts. In partnership with students up and down the country,
spiked is holding a series of debates and will be publishing reports
from student writers on the free-speech issues affecting their
university. Visit the campaign page
here. Read coverage of the campaign
here. The panel will have:-
Tom Slater - Assistant Editor of Spiked.
Sam Butler – President, Liverpool Guild of Students.
Chris Malburn - President, Liverpool University Humanists Society.
Christopher Beckett (chair) – Postgraduate Student, University of
Liverpool.
If any of your readers are students and want to take part, they can
reserve a place fir the debate at the International Lounge,
Liverpool Guild of Students', via logging on to this Facebook
Page that also has some
information on the topics being covered." said Rossa Minogue.

LIVERPOOL, ST
HELENS AND PRESTON ARE THE FIRST TO HEAR THE MELODY OF THE HUMAN
HEART
A brand new music
experience like no other is set to tour England's North West next
month as conceptual artist Egle Mei works with two well known
composers and the Liverpool String Quartet (featuring RLPO
musicians). They will showcase ground-breaking new classical
compositions created by listening and recording the sounds of
people's hearts, connecting them into melodies and creating music
for string quartet.
The tour plays its first performances next month at Liverpool's St
George's Hall, on 11 April 2014, St Helens Town Hall on, 19 April and
The Playhouse in Preston on, 25 April 2014, the tour then continues to
Fleetwood and Burnley,
Heart Variations for String Quartet probes deep into the human
psyche, seeking to unite the language of body, music and feelings in
an exciting cross-curricular science and music programme, linking
psychology and neuroscience (biofeedback system) with music
education, composition and chamber music.
The music will be performed by the acclaimed Liverpool String
Quartet. Founded in 2010, the Liverpool String Quartet is made up of
classical musicians of the highest standard. Collectively, they
studied in some of the world's most prestigious musical
establishments, and currently are members or collaborate regularly
with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as many
other orchestras in England and Spain.
Premiering in the North West, Heart Variations For String Quartet is
the result of an ambitious two year project by creative director
Egle Mei; achieved by recording electrical impulses of people's
hearts (ECGs) and encoding them into notes. In collaboration with
two of England's best composers; singer, songwriter and master of
many instruments Meike Holzmann and classical music genius Ian
Stephens, whose music has been performed by several famous
orchestras, these encoded notes are turned into two beautiful and
breath-taking contemporary classical music pieces which will be
performed across the region.
Egle Mei said:- "We have all experienced the beauty of freedom
and the tragedy of choice. How many hours in life do we spend
counting the pros and cons? Possibly, enough time to live five
happier lives while better learning how to listen to our hearts.
I am very lucky to have a chance to work with talented composers in
the North West. Meike Holzmann and Ian Stephens have given the most
beautiful forms and colors to the encoded notes, wrapped them into a
language from which any audience can find their own meaning. And of
course, the heart music wouldn't speak for itself. Nobody else could
play it so passionately and expressively as the Liverpool String
Quartet."
Also as part of the concert, talented and creative pupils from each
town on the tour, the winners of the Young Composers Competition;
taking place prior to the tour, will share their very special and
first classical music compositions for string quartet. The audience
will have a chance to vote for their favourite young composer on the
night.
Egle Mei said:- "Students had a chance to take part in our
free workshops, getting to know more about biofeedback and create
music compositions for string quartet. There's nothing more
important than growing and supporting our creative youth who might
themselves become great composers one day."
The evening will also include refreshments and after party with the
participants, so join us for a rich, entertaining, interactive
evening of innovative new music!

APPEAL -
BURGLARY - MAGHULL
MERSEYSIDE Police has
released pictures of distinctive jewellery stolen during a burglary
in Maghull on Wednesday, 26 February 2014. Officers were called to
Brook Road at around 4.10pm following a report that a house had been
broken into at sometime since 11am that morning. It's believed the
offenders forced their way into the property and searched the rooms
before escaping with a substantial amount of jewellery and some
cash. The property has been forensically examined and CCTV
opportunities from the area are being explored. An investigation to
establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident is
underway.
Detective Inspector Cheryl Rhodes,
Sefton CID, said:- "Any burglary is a frightening experience
which often leaves victims feeling violated. In this case, the
householders are particularly upset as the jewellery which has been
taken has a great deal of sentimental value. The pictures we have
released show some of the stolen items including a Chopard watch
surrounded by diamonds, a ring set with a pink tourmaline stone and
diamonds and another ring set with diamonds and a green stone. These
pieces, and the other ones shown, mean a lot to the victims and they
are obviously desperate for their safe return. They are very
distinctive and I'd appeal to anyone who may have been offered any
of the items for sale, or know where they are, to get in touch with
us. A black BMW is also thought to have been seen in the area around
the time the burglary happened and I'd urge people who saw anything
suspicious last Wednesday, or who have any other information about
the incident, to give us a call."
People can speak to officers from
Sefton CID on:- 0151 777 3833 or via the police non-emergency:- 101
number. They can
also contact Crimestoppers, anonymously, on:- 0800 555 111. |
