DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER
ANNOUNCES MULTI MILLION POUND BOOST FOR YOUTH JOBS IN THE LIVERPOOL
City REGION!
THE Liverpool City Region,
Merseyside, will get a £5.9 million cash injection to help young
people into jobs that last, Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg and
Minister for Cities Greg Clark will announce on Thursday, 14
November 2013.
The investment is part of a pot of cash from Government for Cities
to invest over the next 3 years, with Cities estimating that this
will help more than 25,000 young people into work.
Jobs for young people is one of the most pressing items on the
agenda for our Cities and this funding package will put City leaders
in the driving seat so they can make changes at a local level,
invest in their young people and the future prosperity of their
City, and tackle youth unemployment head on.
Liverpool, which has already secured a landmark City Deal, was 1 of
8 core Cities to have submitted proposals, earlier this year, for a
share of up to £50m. The Cities had to prove that they can deliver
innovative schemes which explicitly tackle the problem of youth
employment.
The £5.9m will be spent on programmes to help young people into
work, including a new scheme aimed at helping the most disadvantaged
people find jobs. This will be on a payment by results basis, so
that organisations and providers that are placing people in work
will only be rewarded for success. A personalised budget approach
will also be introduced, allowing young people to choose what
support will best prepare them for work. This is aimed at helping 18
to 24 year olds take greater responsibility for their careers.
Alongside this, the Liverpool City Region Local Enterprise
Partnership will also develop a new business-led employer engagement
campaign to drive up the number of opportunities for young people,
including work experience places, apprenticeships and jobs
This funding announcement comes as the Deputy Prime Minister meets
young apprentices from across the country at the Skills Show and the
National Apprenticeship Awards in Birmingham, which recognise and
celebrate the very best of young British talent, and the employers
going that extra mile to help our apprentices to progress.
Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg said:- "Helping young people
succeed is crucial to our economic recovery. That is why I am
pleased to announce a Government investment of £5.9 million for
Liverpool to help get more young people into jobs. This is a
multi-million pound cash boost for the Liverpool City Region to
invest in its young people and the future prosperity of the City,
making our society fairer so that everyone has the chance to get on
in life. Investment like this, paired with a determination to tackle
youth unemployment by our great Cities, has the genuine power to
change the fortunes of young people across the region, whether it's
with extra training, improving education, or apprenticeships."
Minister for Cities Greg Clark said:- "The days of Whitehall
holding all the purse strings are coming to an end. Handing power
over how Cities spend money is important; this way, local leaders
can do what's best for the young people in their area. They know
what will work and can make a real difference to their economic
future by shaping the workforce of tomorrow."
The government is committed to making long-term investments in young
people's futures through work experience and apprenticeships.
It places Cities at the centre of the design and delivery of new
schemes to complement the Government's existing investment to tackle
youth unemployment.
Did you know that:-
► There are more people in work
today than ever before. Since 2010 the government has helped to
create over 1.4 million jobs in the private sector and over 1
million apprenticeships have started since the election?
► Since April 2012, over 136,000 young
people have started a work experience placement through the Youth
Contract?
► The Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg and
Minister for Cities Greg Clark launched a competition for Cities to
design trailblazing initiatives to boost youth employment using £50m
of funding from the Youth Contract scheme on 30 July 2013?
Residents can recycle their poppies at
Sainsbury's Southport
FOLLOWING the fundraising
success of The Royal British Legion's Poppy Appeal, customers can
make their poppies go further this year at their local Sainsbury's.
For the first time, the Sainsbury's Southport store are providing a
recycling service to support The Royal British Legion, the UK's
leading Armed Forces charity. Between 12 November and 24 November
2013, customers can choose to recycle their poppies via an in-store
collection point. During this time, a poppy recycling box will be
available at the Southport store Customer Service Desk and all
poppies that have been returned will be sent to The Royal British
Legion to enable them to re-use or recycle them. Sainsbury's, who
have supported the Poppy Appeal for the last 19 years, is the only
retailer providing this unique service. If 5 million poppies are
returned to Sainsbury's, this could save The Royal British Legion up
to £100,000. Sainsbury's Store Manager Tom Mellet said:- "The
Poppy Appeal was a great success this year for fundraising and we'd
like to thank everyone who contributed. With this recycling
initiative, we wanted to show our customers that they can make their
poppy go further and enable the Legion to save. We hope the
recycling drive proves a success with our Southport customers."
Catherine Gowers, Corporate Partnerships Manager at The Royal
British Legion added:- "We're delighted that in addition to
the amazing support we have received from Sainsbury's for this
year's Poppy Appeal, Sainsbury's are our corporate partner for this
recycling initiative. It's the first time our supporters can make
their poppies go further. We will be using all of the recycled
poppies we receive to make new ones or to raise funds from the
recycled material, all of which will support next year's Poppy
Appeal. During this year's Poppy Appeal, there were many ways that
customers could make a donation. These included collectors from The
Royal British Legion in-store, who raised funds between 28 October
and 11 November 2013." |

Can you make a
business of fundraising?
STICK 'n' Step is launching
the 50/50 challenge, its biggest ever fundraising initiative, at an
event at Thornton Hall Hotel, Wirral on 21 November 2013, from 6pm
to 8 pm. With a collective target of £150,000 the funds raised from
the challenge will allow the charity to improve and expand its
service offering.
The 50/50 Challenge is simple; Stick 'n' Step is giving 50
businesses £50 each to kick-start the fundraising, and then it's up
to each company to get creative and see how much money can be
raised.
Businesses can opt to invest the
initial £50 into fundraising costs, such as buying baking goods to
make and sell cakes or entering a sponsored race. They can even
reinvest the £50 again and again.
Companies can choose how they fundraise and there's no limit on how
much money each business has to raise. The only fundraising target
is a collective one between all 50 companies of £150,000. That means
anything goes; be it a one-off company event for everyone to get
involved or multiple individuals gaining sponsorship for various
activities throughout the year.
This is the perfect opportunity to
be creative with fundraising, and companies are encouraged to use
their business acumen and putting their skills to good use.
Commented Kerry Roe-Ely, Community and events fundraiser at Stick
'n' Step:- "Motivational speaker Dave Verburg will be on hand
to get everyone fired up for the year ahead at the launch, and each
company will receive its £50, certificate and fundraising pack. The
launch will also be a great opportunity for those already signed-up
to meet their competitors and share ideas on fundraising activities
they could be doing over the next year. We are hoping to have at
least half of the companies signed up in time for the launch.
However, we will continue to seek out new supporters over the coming
months."
Throughout the challenge, Stick 'n' Step will host quarterly
networking events, allowing companies to share ideas and updates on
progress, send monthly e-newsletters and hold a mid-challenge BBQ
for all those involved. The challenge will conclude with an Awards
Ball, where fundraising successes such as 'Most daring' and 'Most
original' will be celebrated and the total raised will be announced.
Stick 'n' Step provides conductive education and support services to
children with cerebral palsy and their families and is the only
resource in the North West that is free of charge. Conductive
education is a proven approach that aids the development of
functional skills in people with cerebral palsy. It costs
approximately £3,500 each year to fund just one child's place at
Stick 'n' Step, and the charity relies completely on the fundraising
efforts of the community to remain a free service.
There are currently 70 children
and their families who travel from across the North West and North
Wales to attend weekly sessions at Stick 'n' Step.
Stick 'n' Step is still looking for companies to get involved now,
so get in touch and prove that you can make a business of
fundraising!
