Met Office
issues health weather warning
IT is official, the UK is
in a heat wave. The Met Office has issued a health weather warning
on the hottest day of the year so far, as a heat wave continues to
grip much of the UK. On Wednesday, 17 July 2013, temperatures were
hotter than most, with a Level 3 alert for London and the South East
which meant health and social workers have to contact the vulnerable
including pregnant women. Also the North West is
expected to be raised to Level 3 over the weekend, as well. The NHS
says that:- "The very young, the elderly and the seriously ill
are the groups who are particularly at risk of health problems when
the weather is very hot. In particular, very hot weather can make
heart and breathing problems worse." According to the NHS
the most vulnerable people in extreme heat are:-
► Older people, especially those over 75.
► Babies and young children.
► People with a serious chronic condition,
especially heart or breathing problems.
► People with mobility problems, for
example people with Parkinson's disease or who have had a stroke.
► People with serious mental health
problems.
► People on certain medications, including
those that affect sweating and temperature control.
► People who misuse alcohol or drugs.
► People who are physically active, for
example labourers or those doing sports.
It is suggested that people with in those areas or looking after any
of the above should visit the NHS

Exhibition to change perceptions
AN exhibition at St
George's Hall will present a unique insight into how some young
people perceive themselves and their City. The exhibition called:-
'PERCEPTION', is the result of a project spanning the
last 5 years, and has been produced by young people involved with
the Youth Offending Service in Liverpool. It takes place at the
Dickens Gallery at St George's Hall between 10 August and 1
September 2013. Perception has been led by photographer Paul
Jamieson and features 30 images of Liverpool produced by the young
people. It highlights how perception is only a case of how you
choose to see something. Throughout the programme the young
people were asked to take a second look of sights they encounter
every day and explore how they could be seen in a better light. They
were able to explore their own perception and how to change how they
are perceived. Councillor Peter Brennan, Mayoral Lead for Community
Safety, said:- "This is an important exhibition which I am
delighted to support. Not only were those involved challenged to
look at themselves and how they view their environment but it also
challenges those viewing it to consider how they perceive these
young people." All the pieces in the Perceptions exhibition
are for sale, with proceeds going to Alder Hey and Claire House.
HUNDREDS OF DOGS MICRO-CHIPPED AS
OPERATION MONARO CONTINUES
390 dogs have been mirco-chipped
during the 1st 3 weeks of Merseyside Police's operation to tackle
irresponsible dog ownership. Officers from Merseyside Police's dog
section, along with neighbourhood officers and partner
organisations, have been out and about in Merseyside's parks and
open spaces as part of 6 week long operation. Officers have met
hundreds of dog owners, with partners have micro-chipped over 390
dogs, given out 36 neutering vouchers and seized a number of dogs
which are banned breeds under the Dangerous Dogs Act, or have been
dangerously out of control in a public place. The operation, which
is in response to concerns voiced by residents followings a number
of incidents involving dog attacks across the UK still has another
three weeks of activity throughout the Merseyside area. Inspector
Mark Fallows of Merseyside Police's dog section said:- "The
operation has been very successful so far, and the public are
pleased to see our officers out and about in Merseyside Parks. By
meeting with dog owners we have been able to reassure them that our
operation is not about demonising them or their dogs, but
encouraging responsible dog ownership and targeting those who use
their dogs to intimidate others." Activity is set to
continue for the next 3 weeks across Merseyside with a number of
initiatives. In Knowsley next week officers will be meeting with
Post Office workers to talk about the problems that many of them
face in their job every day. Chief Inspector Kevin Wellens said:- "Postal
workers are a group of people who may face specific challenges with
dogs in their job. We are keen to talk to them about any particular
problems that they face as part of their 'bite back' campaign." |

Unique
collection of Beatles' photographic prints set to come under the
hammer
A significant collection of
largely unpublished photographic prints spanning The Beatles' entire
career is set to come under the hammer at Cuttlestones'
Wolverhampton Auction Rooms on Friday, 16 August 2013.
Capturing performances, intimate off-stage moments and tour images
of the band during the years that they dominated the world charts,
the images were taken by official Beatles photographer Derek Cooper
during his 13 year association with the band.
What makes these photographs so rare is the fact that they remained
undiscovered until some ten years after the photographer's death,
when two films were found in cameras bequeathed by Cooper to a
childhood friend in Liverpool. When the negatives were investigated,
to the great surprise of all concerned, they contained a total of 34
photographs of The Beatles. Since their discovery, the images have
been the subject of several exhibitions in Liverpool, the US and
Japan and a single print, signed by Ringo Starr, sold at auction.
This, however, is the 1st time that prints of these
negatives are being sold on the open market; representing an
exceptional opportunity for Beatles fans to acquire a genuinely
unique photographic record of the iconic band. Wolverhampton Sale
Room Manager, Tom Waldron, says:- "We are honoured to have the
opportunity to sell such a rare collection; due to the band's
massive fame most images of them have been extensively re-produced
so, when these negatives were originally discovered, it was a real
treasure trove. They have since been displayed as part of official
exhibitions across the globe, but never before has the vendor
consigned prints on this scale for sale; so this really is a unique
opportunity."
As to how a Liverpool-based vendor came to be selling such a rare
collection of images through a West Midlands auction house, Tom
says:- "The vendor heard me being interviewed on BBC Radio
Merseyside earlier this year about the sale of a letter from John
Lennon's Aunt 'Mimi' Smith, decided to approach us regarding the
sale of prints from his collection – and the rest is history. Due to
The Beatles' global fanbase, we anticipate that there will be huge
International interest in these lots, so the majority of bidders
will probably be active on the phone lines or bidding live on the
internet."
The photographs being offered for sale are being split into two
lots. The 1st will comprise 40 photographic prints of the band in
various situations through the 1960's to the early 1970's; 34 of
which are those discovered on Derek Cooper's camera films and six
from other sources. John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and
Ringo Star all feature in shots that range from formal portraits to
informal back stage, tour and performance images. This represents
the opportunity to procure a significant, largely unpublished
collection the majority of which have, as yet, only been available
for public viewing while on exhibition.
The 2nd lot consists of 2 unpublished photographic
prints depicting variously John Lennon, George Harrison and Ringo
Starr from Derek Cooper's negatives alongside 2 images from another
source featuring John in performance with Rolling Stones' members
Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. Measuring 33 cm x H. 48 cm these
prints have been stylishly framed and glazed, and would no doubt
make a welcome adornment to the wall of any discerning Beatles fan.
The lots will come under the hammer on Friday, 16 August 2013 during
Cuttlestones' next Specialist Collectors' Auction at its
Wolverhampton Auction Rooms. Viewing will take place the day prior
