HAVE YOUR CAKE AND EAT IT FOR CHARITY

A group of local volunteers organised an Afternoon Tea to raise funds for a local cancer charity and raised £700.

Held on Wednesday, 22 May 2013, the Southport Committee of North West Cancer Research (NWCR) invited people to join them for Afternoon Tea consisting of cake washed down with tea or coffee.

Olive Cutts, Chair of the Southport Committee said:- "The event was lovely and we're thrilled with how much money we raised. I'd like to thank the Southport Lyric Singers for providing the musical backdrop for this social event. Our events are very well supported and this was the case with the Afternoon Tea."

Anne Jackson, Chief Executive of NWCR said:- "Our Southport Committee fundraise tirelessly for the charity and I cannot thank them enough for hosting this lovely Afternoon Tea. Without the support of our fundraising committees we would not be able to continue funding world-class cancer research projects here in the North West."

Treble winners!

LIVERPOOL City Council's Building Control team has scored a hat-trick in a prestigious awards scheme.   The refurbishment and extension of Liverpool's central library won the award for the best technical development in the Local Authorities Building Controls (LABC) North West building excellence awards.  In partnership with property group Downing the team was also the winner in the best partnership category for two projects worth more than £30m for student accommodation in Leeds and Newcastle. They were also the winner in the Best Social or Affordable Housing category for a Compendium Living/Riverside group scheme in Wood Lane.  And they were also highly commended in the large housing development section for a scheme with Countryside Homes in Norris Green.  The regional winners will now go through to the national finals to be held in London later this year.

LABC Chief Executive Paul Everall said:- "Our regional building excellence awards are an opportunity to celebrate good practice. All our winners demonstrated how attention to detail and a positive working relationship with Building Control departments can achieve high quality and sustainable buildings fit for the future. Our awards are unique because they recognise how the work of local authority surveyors helps to improve building standards and boost sustainability and efficiency."

Councillor Malcolm Kennedy, cabinet member for regeneration, said:- "Building control is playing a vital role in the regeneration of the City by ensuring that developments are carried out to the highest standard and these awards are very well merited."

Letters to the editor:- "USS Iowa in America, (BOA70)"

"I thought your readers might like to know that as Liverpool marked the 70th Anniversary of the Battle of the Atlantic (BOA 70), across the water in the US, they also marked the anniversary, with the help of a flag from Merseyside. On 26 May 2013 of the Royal Navy, White Ensign flag flying alongside the Stars and Stripes on the USS Iowa, in an America port. The Vintage Royal Navy White Ensign was from Retro Interiors in Waterloo and signed by Jack Atkinson, who is a retired Navy seaman, who lives in Waterloo, and was on the Nelson Class battleship, HMS Rodney. HMS Rodney was built in Cammell Laird, Birkenhead and She became one of the ships that took part in the Battle of the Atlantic. She was also one of ships that helped to sink the German Pocket Bismarck. The crew had raided the flag to honour Jack and the ships crews of the Rodney and the Bismarck and all the British and American and German seamen who fought the Battle of the Atlantic during ww2. The Iowa is the only USA battleship that is left, that was actually in the battle of the Atlantic." Sue Mulholland.
