Cruise Liner
Terminal Conclusion Discussions
DISCUSSIONS about
Liverpool's Cruise Liner Terminal could be concluded:- "by the
summer" following the personal intervention of the City's
Mayor. Liverpool's Mayor travelled to Brussels last week to meet
with key officials from the European Commission to:- "find a
clear way forward."
The Commission has been asked to look at the case
following complaints from rival ports. Mayor Anderson said:-
"We have already provided information on the terminal to both the
government and the Commission. But I think it's better to meet
people face to face. We were warmly welcomed and the meeting was
very encouraging. I am confident that a conclusion will be reached
quickly – possibly as early as the summer. I'm very grateful to
Arlene McCarthy for her help in arranging this key meeting."
National accolade for Hall Lane
scheme
LIVERPOOL'S work to revamp
a major gateway into the City has earned more national praise.
The £19 million Hall Lane Strategic Gateway scheme has scooped a
national Institute of Civil Engineers CEEQUAL award, which
recognises high quality work in the design and construction of major
schemes.
CEEQUAL assessors awarded Liverpool the 'Whole Team Award'
for the partnership between the City Council, 2020 Liverpool, Birse
Civils and Bal4 Beatty. The scheme was granted:- "Excellent
Status", CEEQUAL's highest grade.
It's the latest success for the scheme, which was also named the
'Infrastructure Project of The Year' at last year's
annual Builder and Engineer Awards.
Liverpool City Council's Cabinet Member for Transport, Councillor
Tim Moore, attended the CEEQUAL awards ceremony, held at the
Institute of Civil Engineers in London. He said:- "The Hall
Lane scheme has transformed a key route into the City Centre. It has
removed 1 of the worst bottlenecks in the City, and is providing a
much better image of Liverpool to visitors as well as a much better
environment for the local neighbourhood. The successful
delivery of this scheme was down to effective partnerships, and it's
great news that this has been recognised nationally. Working
together, we have delivered a scheme that will bring huge benefits
to the local community, to commuters and to the wider public for
many years to come."
Hall Lane, a major arterial route from the M62 to Liverpool City
Centre, is used by almost 35,000 vehicles every day. It had suffered
from significant congestion and safety issues, bottlenecks and
constricted carriageways.
Work was completed in summer 2011, creating a much improved route
into the City from the east, including a new dual carriageway, 6
major junctions, extensive utilities works, and a 400 metre long, 7
metre high retaining wall. The scheme also saw improvements to
cycling, public transport and pedestrian routes as well as new
controlled pedestrian crossings, new street lighting, CCTV cameras
and the planting of new trees.
The CEEQUAL Awards celebrate high standards within the civil
engineering industry. The organisation carries out detailed
assessments of civil engineering, infrastructure, landscaping and
public realm projects in the UK and Ireland. |

LIVERPOOL ART
PRIZE MOVES TO THE ALBERT DOCK
IN the wake of the
announcement of the 4 talented local artists who have been
shortlisted for Liverpool Art Prize 2013, the prize's organisers
Metal can now reveal that this year's exhibition of finalists' work
will move into Liverpool City Centre for the very 1st time in the
competition's 6 year history.
The 2013 Liverpool Art Prize Exhibition will be housed in the Grand
Hall at the City's historic Albert Dock – which this year celebrates
the 25th anniversary of its official reopening – from Friday, 26
April 2013, until Saturday, 8 June 2013.
The shortlist which comprises local artists Kevin Hunt, Tabitha
Moses, Juliann O'Malley and Laurence Payot was decided by a highly
qualified panel of judges, which comprises Sally Tallant (Director
of Liverpool Biennial), Tim Etchells (multi-disciplinary artist),
Laura Davis and Robyn Woolston (Artist and winner of Liverpool Art
Prize 2012). The shortlisted artists will need to continue to
impress the panel with the work they exhibit at the Liverpool Art
Prize exhibition in order to win. The winner will be revealed at an
awards ceremony on Wednesday, 29 May 2013, at which the People's
Choice Award winner will also be revealed. The overall winner of the
Liverpool Art Prize will receive £2,000 and be offered a show at The
Walker Art Gallery during the ensuing 12 month period. A People's
Choice Award winner, determined by a public vote from visitors to
the exhibition, will receive £1,000.
Jenny Porter, Project Manager at Metal, said:- "We're really
excited to be working with Albert Dock bringing the Art Prize into
this great location. It's very special to make this happen in the
25th anniversary since the regeneration of the Dock began."
Graham Cook, Director of Albert Dock Company, said:- "The
Albert Dock Company is delighted to offer the Grand Hall for use by
the Liverpool Art Prize. We are always interested in partnering with
arts initiatives and the Liverpool Art Prize is such a firm fixture
on the City's calendar we couldn't refuse. This should be a good
addition to the full events programme taking place at the Dock in
its 25th year of regeneration."
The Liverpool Art Prize is a competition of contemporary art, which
was inspired by the Turner Prize coming to Liverpool during the
Capital of Culture year in 2008. It is open to all professional
artists based or born in Liverpool City Region, including the
surrounding boroughs of Liverpool, Wirral, St Helens, Knowsley,
Halton and Sefton.
Previous Liverpool Art Prize winners are Robyn Woolston, Imogen
Stidworthy, AL and AL, David Jacques and Marcus Soukup who exhibited
at the Walker Art Gallery as part of his prize in 2012. The previous
People's Choice winners are James Quin, Brendan Lyons, The Singh
Twins and Elizabeth Willow, who have also gone on to achieve great
respect within the industry. Robyn Woolston, last year's winner,
will present her exhibition at the Walker Art Gallery,
'Stranger in a Strange Land', from Saturday, March 23.
The exhibition will be accompanied by a series of events and
exhibitions happening in and around the City Centre programmed by a
consortium of the City's studio groups and independent arts
organisations for Liverpool Art Month. This year's highlights
include the Arena Art Auction, 'The Drifter's Escape'
exhibition at the Bridewell featuring work inspired by the music of
Bob Dylan, and the Lowe Photo Booth project at Matt Ford Studio for
Light Night, amongst many other exciting events involving local
artists throughout the month of May.
